videogame things you think about a lot

Thinking about it makes more sense now that JRPGs in the 8 and 16bit era came with giant manuals that had item and spell descriptions because trying to read all that text in pixel is a full time job.

blake peebles!!! legend!!!

gonna be thinking a lot about how the inspiration for the straightjacket monsters in silent hill 2 came from the office hoodie bro.

(also was meant to look like a body bag, not a straight jacket, which is interesting!)

How a handful of early Pokemon: Gloom, Ditto, Electrode, Golem, Alakazam, Slowpoke, maybe a few more: don’t have marketable, fully trademarkable, pun names. Just some regular words that got grandfathered in

Playing the Japanese version and realizing their are two names for all these stupid beasts and yet they had the good sense to keep Pikachu.

A lot of these Japanese names aren’t even puns. They really just call Vileplume “Rafflesia.” The team making these English names were really hitting hard.

Had this and remain disappointed to this day that it wasn’t the OST

old consoles as a kind of lingua franca. like, if you make a game for game boy/famicom/mega drive, and sell the rom on your itchio page, you’re selling a game people can play on those systems, but also on the original host hardware, as well as pretty much any other console or handheld from the past 20 years (though some of those might need hacking to do it, i think most people buying roms from itchio probably have some hacked hardware lying around)

I’ve been having an existential crisis since finding out that at the least Battle Garegga artificially inflates it’s difficulty for the first six plays when it is turned on. Thinking back on years of games and mame and just wondering.

Not just from a score attack perspective but also that there is two kinds of standard play. What if this goes all the way around?

Maybe the game is intentionally messing with you? You gotta wait for the right credit.

Haven’t been this shaken in video games since I found out the mushroom house rewards in SMB3 are determined the second you enter the room and it doesn’t matter what chest you choose.
