COOOOOOOOOOOOOL BOARDERS! HEREWEGO
trying to imagine what a kojima matsuno collab would be like aside from comically overbudget and all i can settle on is that matsuno would give every character a sister and kojima would be weirdly performatively horny about it
oh god
I had more fun with Quake, a game slapped together in way too short a time by a very small team, than I did with Destiny 2, a game slapped together in way too short of a time by a very large team of people who by all accounts did everything right. I had more fun with The Frog For Whom The Bell Tolls, a game where you’re a guy with a sword and traverse an island, than Ghosts of Tsushima, a game where you’re a guy with a sword and traverse an island. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I am either completely out of touch with contemporary games with an “evolving meta” and take hundreds of hours to grok the many game systems, or maybe games were just better 10-15 years ago and after a certain point they just stopped trying new things and became homogeneous. Maybe that’s too simplistic, maybe I need to broaden my horizons, but I can’t be arsed to get into Game Of the Year contender Horizon: Zero Dawn: Forbidden West: Problematic Edition.
Not to say I don’t have a good time with some AAAs. I enjoyed Just Cause 4, a clone of Just Cause 3. You blow things up and can drive cars around, and unlike Gran Theft Auto 5 or 4, there aren’t edgy jokes built into the game world. I enjoyed a little bit of the Mad Max game until the insufferable quicktime event driven hand to hand combat became too excruciating to play (what is it with AAA games and overwrought melee combat systems?). I thought the combat encounters in Halo 5 were actually pretty good on a not too tough but not too easy difficulty setting. I had a really really good time a few years ago with PvZ Garden Warfare. That game is slept upon.
Am I getting old? yeah. Am I out of touch? Absolutely. I don’t want to download apex legends and spend 100 hours dying over and over again to random strangers. Fortnite feels like a baby game for babies. I have long given up on trying to get into Destiny. These games require such a time sink in order to be good enough to enjoy a normal multiplayer match. How does anyone find these genuinely fun? What is fun?
Maybe try games by small teams?
Severed Steel was mostly made by one guy.
BPM was made by like a four person team.
If you like Quake, consider giving Hrot a try.
There’s a demo if you want to try without putting money into it.
If AAA does nothing for you, don’t despair. Rejoice! Think about how much more time that gives you to play games that are actually good
Yeah developing a sense of your taste that is not 1:1 with triple-A is actually huge. I agree, this is a time for rejoice and exploration, and maybe revisiting things. (also hello jed, from twitter!)
well you’re posting in the right place for one, welcome to being a snob
find your fun, find what is uniquely enjoyable to you and post non stop about it

welcome, you have found your people
Puyo Puyo 2
Definitely gonna think about giacomo and oreste from now on
the one that looks like liero but grey and maroon is pretty aesthetic
my copy of liero was from my mate who always played with 0% reload speed so i thought the gauss gun was meant to double as a jetpack and the chiquita bombs were meant to flood the screen and cause massive slowdown
