videogame things you think about a lot

that’s 100 down to platform and not the technology though and I think Microsoft know that

Geforce Now etc are doing perfectly well

Sure, pitched as an optional extension technology, I think it has its place. As a sweeping vision for replacing local play and extending the fragility of games as historical objects (which Google clumsily set themselves up as, presumably in order to pitch it internally), I’m glad it continues to fail.

am I being obstinate if my response to this is that I honestly don’t think any solution other than bittorrent and scene crackers is meaningful in this context anyway

I agree with you, but they’d be in just as much trouble up against games exclusively streamed and then shuttered after the tail ran long.

oh, against games that are exclusively streamed, absolutely. I’m not expecting the console market diverging from the PC enthusiast market in this regard to cause that, though

Same, I think the advantages of local computing next to remote have remained pretty durable for games just as the console model has remained surprisingly durable, and while Microsoft is moving into a position where they don’t have to care about owning the console, I think even they will keep seeing it useful to build a statically-specced box for their amorphous omnipresent subscription service.

I mean, Wall Street has hated infrastructure CapEx of any kind for decades now. Right now they’re reluctant to even drill more shale oil despite the fact that prices are skyrocketing. On balance they’d prefer to just make money off the higher prices on the existing oil supply than lock in their capital on actual investment. That argument applies 10x stronger for broadband.

Starlink is the exception because Musk has a reality distortion field that lets him go all in on CapEx and get more investment, because retail investors don’t think this way. But every company beholden more to institutional investors continues to be subject to the same incentives.

Going down the streaming road leads to not being able to own anything.

People have not been kind to the cloud games on the switch

I assume publishers are extremely eager to move to streaming-only as soon as it’s reasonably feasible because it will essentially mean the end of game piracy (and preservation, and modding)

physical media’s dyin’, cloud

It’s really insulting in this case because every game up to KH3 should run on Switch but they opted for white label streaming instead of proper ports

oh yeah another thing i think about a lot is gemstones take on PvP

There really should never be PvP (Player vs. Player conflict) in any game and if it were to start in Platinum, it would be dealt with pretty harshly. CvC (Character vs. Character conflict) is a whole other story. There is little CvC that will lead to the injury or death of another, possibly because the ones who tend to lop off heads are given a fairly wide berth in situations which might lead to their aggressions being unleashed. Most of these characters are pointed out to new members of the Platinum society soon after arriving, so don’t worry about that too much. Keep in mind that no one kills without reason in Platinum. For instance, your character might be killed for things that s/he might otherwise get away with in Prime such as slapping, punching or kicking another character. Imagine some peasant three days off the turnip farm strolling up to “Merlin” and slapping him upside the head. Think there would be enough left of said peasant to fill a thimble?

(platinum is their 50 dollar a month plan that takes place in an entirely different instance with a different storyline and different major houses)

in prime CvC duels happen infrequently but when they do its a HUGE spectacle

ALTHOUGH ojne time someone had their fleshzone grandpa kill me for stream sniping (i didnt know what the phrase meant at the time, i thought it meant taking away viewers with your own stream on the same subject not going up to someone in game while they’re streaming) and before he killed me he said that he had no idea what streaming even was but he loves his granddaughter so i had to die
