Memes came to be synonymous with jokes roughly around the same time memes stopped being funny at all. Pretty wild.

IT WAS ALL A MEME

i only encounter “meme humor” as a derisive reference e.g. to Undertale

Memes have mostly gone from largely absurdist image macros with humorous tweaks and influences to just shitty editorial-cartoon labeling of any picture to make a tired point you’ve read a thousand times, political or whatever, possibly with the heads of your favorite franchise characters pasted on them. They’re just boring declarative sentences now.

oh god i used to see this descriptor all over /a/. it was like people were trying to come up with the dumbest possible way to out-cynical each other. “meme show”, “meme characters”, “meme animation” “meme writer” “meme director”

it was in the same disparaging sense you’d see in a phrase like “hah, looks like someone fell for the meme

I’d more or less forgotten there was this whole other axis where gamercomicsgatish turd-types were using “meme” in that disparaging way. We’re fighting over the meaning of every word on like 3 distinct fronts at all times.

i believe the peak of it was “women are a meme”

Years ago, somebody I know was responding to some conservative image meme that their dad had shared. They countered it saying it had false information and shared a huffington post article as evidence. Their dad responded “HUFFINGTON POST IS A MEME,” which is a detail that has crystallized in our collective memories.

i love that the world-trade center is absent from the liberty island skybox because, the record goes, including them wast too costly for their resource budget on that level. It’s a beautifully paranoid coincidence.

posting my own videogame thing about deus ex. i quote this all the time.
