the rumor is that the next one is going to be set in vice city and whatever the gta version of rio is called in the 70s and 80s and that sounds believable to me because they must realize a modern gta is no longer possible because the world turned into a gta version of itself

thinking about a weird trend i can’t remember specific examples of, and maybe also just invented to torment myself, where videogame discourse people in the last year or so started casually referring to any kind of comedy in a videogame as “memes”. like deliberate laurel & hardy style slapstick is memes, NPC dialogue boxes containing jokes are also memes, along with glitches, funny mods, etc… did i dream this, was it all a dream…?

Maybe the general standards of comedy have just waned and meme content has filled the void as the new standard. I can’t remember the last great comedy show or movie that was released. Youtube recommends me skits and memes on a daily basis though.
maybe! i was sort of thinking of it as a conceptual slippage, or cannibalism, by which an older thing gets treated as a subcategory of the newer one rather than vice versa. i guess it depressed me since i already feel like vgame spaces are pretty bad at talking about or valuing comedy, so having the entire concept downgraded to “variations on the image macro” gives me strong doom feelings.

arent people using ‘meme’ to mean beyond image macros now? all jokes that caught on recently are kinda referred to memes now it feels like. its weird to me too
but yeah ive seen it just used synonymously with joke all the time
it’s definitely been used as a stand-in for “any kind of joke on the internet” for a while, i guess i’ve found it strange to see it slowly also expand into “any kind of joke in internet-adjacent art” as well. or the idea that any joke in a vgame was put there with the ultimate goal of eventually being found and converted into a meme, although there are definitely also things that have that aim!!

It’s a real odd feeling to be straddling two eras, one where a meme has broadened scope from a specific internet image joke format to anything joke-esque and the other, way long ago, when it meant any semantic content transmitted through imitation and mutation through connected social groups.
