i have no idea tbh! it’s someone’s game that seems to be in perpetual development. i think it was submitted to a festival years ago and i could never get the game build to run but the video stuck with me. it looks like the game is i guess more “polished” now judging by the videos on that channel but no less of a maximalist mess.

Word groups in the AGI engine define words and their synonyms (for example: acquire, take, get). King’s Quest II has a single word group for its female characters, which means that you can call Valanice or Grandma “mermaid” and still have the parser understand you. The parser also understands perfectly if you refer to Little Red Riding Hood as a “sperm burping gutter slut”.

honestly, the manhack is an underappreciated enemy concept. it really adds another element to the terrifying character of the Combine that, when people refuse to comply and are hiding out of reach, they just send in swarms of floating razor blades to corner them and do their thing. Imagining that enemy as a real thing (which, hello, why has pop culture not thought to combine drone paranoia with the ingenuity of Saw in this direction) and just the image of someone holding a bat whose got, like, one shot at defending themselves.

Go get 'em slugger. bzZZ!

the game Turn Based Racing, and how I haven’t seen a single mention of how incredibly clever that title is

oh I would love for that one guy (who has a creepy infatuation with Roberta Williams and thinks that Oldmanmurray invented misogyny on the internet) to find out about this

this sort of early 3D FMV seems so quaint and nothingy now, it’s odd to reflect on how captivating and even slightly unsettling clips like this were to me at the time i first saw them

i think the things that scan as obvious limitations now just seemed like the “language” of the new medium then, and imbued it with a strange meaning. in a way it came across as hyperreal rather than unreal

It’s my sig now. It only happened last night, but I know it will haunt me forever, and I refuse to go through this alone.

Thank you (?) @HOBO

I’ve mentioned it at SB before (and probably others have, too) but I still find this 1986 thing more compelling and atmospheric than just about anything that has come after it in computer graphics:
