Jeeze, I hadn’t realized that the need for those had passed by the time the patent had expired.
In Monster Hunter world you get the option to buy two items that take up a slot of your inventory each, and passively increase your attack and defense. In typical Monster Hunter design you later get the ability to upgrade them with a monster part that makes them more powerful. However, counterintuitively, you can then buy the lower power versions again, and the boosts from each stack.
I feel like this is kept obscured in the game as an intentional piece of design. The game wants to encourage your choice to grow, and so as soon as you cross the boundary of choosing to get better at the game and researching you can immediately get a reward from it. I have been trying to find a way to implement this method in the real world since I encountered it in monster hunter.
It took me so so long to realize those stack!
MH is so good at that stuff.
I have spent a couple hundred hours in MHW and didn’t know about these items till your post. Whatever “things we wish we knew when we started playing MHW” article I read three and a half years ago let me down big time on this one
every time i see someone mention banjo tooie i think about replaying it just to get to the level “cloud cuckooland” just because my memory of it is so completely mangled and unintelligible feeling and then i finally looked it up on noclip.website and found that no, this is actually just what it looked like
seeing it now it’s kind of endearing as a natural endpoint to rare’s thing of applying zx spectrum action-adventure logic to 3d platform games, just keep going in that direction until you end up with something as modular as a jet set willy map
PYST
Play Mars Matrix

this line from a 2013 thomas pynchon novel set in 2001
Was that when he mentions the main character from Spirits Within?
the line in the same book where a character mentions “hideo kojima, or as he’s known in this house, ‘god’” did make me wonder exactly which 2000s forum posts made it into the big pynchon research cabinet somewhere
i’m quite sure it’s not research and Pynchon is just a 2000s forum dude
