videogame things you think about a lot (Part 1)

is this really the origin? i’ve caught myself saying this from time to time and it’s only because I’ve seen it in your profile

via a random wikipedia wormhole i found some article covering the indie game development scene in 1999 and the very first IGF in the short-lived Maxim-style edgelord pc gaming magazine PC Accelerator.

there’s a game named “Boobies” in here… for some reason. i guess it was a Worms-style strategy game? makes me think of the game “Baldies

oh look, here’s some of their advice for indie game developers in 1999. i wonder what kind of helpful things they have to say… trigger warning

btw the game that won the very first IGF, Fire and Darkness, was never officially finished or released. as were a lot of other games nominated that particular year (i.e. Seed). the trend of very unfinished games winning awards and potentially never releasing at all was a trend that… would continue to the present. lmao. though i guess it’s a little better now than it used to be

the list of nominees from that year is here btw.

oh and in case you were wondering what the tone of PC Accelerator was outside this article, this should give you a good idea:

i seem to recall PC Accelerator was notorious for being trashy and kinda shitty even at the time. i think PC Gamer US used to make fun of them and delighted in their demise (at least until people from that mag ended up working there. lmao). but like… there really isn’t that much difference between this and old issues of PC Gamer or EGM i used to read. other than they’re much more explicit. here’s an extremely typical ad from an issue of PC Gamer i used to own

pc accelerator sounds like it might have been inspired by a lot of the ps1 magazines in the uk which were written by people who desperately wished they were writing for the “lad mags” that were popular in the 90s

yeah i think PC Accelerator was a pretty blatant attempt to cash in on that whole trend. this was also during the window of time where Duke Nukem was a big deal and PC gaming in particular was trying to push that image of being The King Of The FPS. the prestige meathead PC FPS trend ala SiN didn’t actually last for very long though. well, at least the pre-military propaganda phase of it.

Learning about Nintendo’s pre-video game toys was honestly a pretty cool feature of that game
