To follow up, I’m generally very interested in the idea of practices or behavior not intended by the game but driven by player desire or ethics or whatehaveyou. It’s not “emergent gameplay” per se, since it’s not that aspects of the game’s mechanics and rules are being repurposed, but something being pulled in from outside the magic circle to transform the space in ways that are absolutely not programmed in.

(I thought about this a lot when making Temple of the Wumpus, even though that game puts religious practice at its center)

I couldn’t find the post I was referencing, but this is a good reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/islam/comments/hpf79/is_it_ḥarām_to_eat_porkchops_in_minecraft/

romero puts notes with my name on it in his hair to scare me and likes being referred to as brenda romeros husband

carmack says working border patrol is fine. like having a security alarm on your house

one of these men is chumpier than the other

My goodness. They both look 14 in that picture.

i think about when fingle was in the IGF (its that old ipad game where you have to hold your fingers inside squares as they move and it gets very sensual) and john romero tried to play it with brenda. she had to grab him and be like ‘NONONNO we can’t play this here’ and then they ran away

Dude’s made nothing but trash since 1996, and he definitely came across as a huge creep when he was dating stevie case.

About the best things you can say about him now are that brenda romero is great and it makes him look good by proxy, and that Sigil was ok.

He’s not cancelled, he’s just at the same status as he always was and it doesn’t matter how cool his wife is, dude will always come across as sleazy to me.

He’s a lot older than the young-20s suddenly wealthy&famous dude he was in the '90s

daikatana is good despite its many flaws

yeah he offered to help with my broken arm bill and everything

im not talking about them back then, im talking about how theyve grown as people

and like romero being a shitty man in the 90s is a lot different than carmack saying the shit he does in 2019
at least to me

i see where you’re coming from and i understand my bias since hes shown me genuine kindness and isnt a bigot and a racist

i used to own like a dozen copies of this game because they just had a huge stack of them at half price books and i thought it was a funny joke. but i kept coming back to the game and its really grown on me since the first time i played it, i think its the combination of it being very flawed, totally insane, and incredibly ambitious. it has the same magic feeling to it as like after last season, where someones reach majorly exceeded their grasp and they failed in an amazing, spectacular way. with patches to fix the technical issues and no AI companions it plays like the most fucked-up wild quake 2 mod youve ever seen and its amazing

its true: daikatana’s first episode is fucking terrible. its the sewer-bog full of fucking dragonflies and frogs everyone hates, its a garbage fire of horrible visuals and design. but heres daikatana again, theres 4 episodes each with their own unique style, enemy and weapon sets. its ridiculously ambitious! full 7 or 8 weapon sets too, not some bullshit like hexen either! its amazing how much better the game gets after the first episode, with more interesting enemies to fight and better level design

yes all the weapon design is goofy and suicidal, but all the weapons are imaginative in their own stupid fucking ways. theres 7 ways to rocket jump in this fucking game!! why? i dont know, dude! episode 1 has the SHOTCYCLER, a shotgun that inexplicably fires 6 shots at once every time you pull the trigger, you can use it to fucking levitate by shooting the ground below you; the sidewinder rocket launcher which fires 2 rockets in a spiral pattern which works normally; AND the base weapon, the ion blaster, which you can shoot at the floor to make a projectile ricochet into your asshole and launch you into the air. episode 2 has a hammer weapon thats so heavy it makes the door creaking sound effect when you lift it and when it hits the ground it hits so hard it sends you flying into the air; theres also the POSEIDON TRIDENT, which fires trident tips as rockets and uses 8 foot tall statues as ammunition. theres a giant ballista in episode 3 that uses tree trunks as ammunition and launches you into the air if you fire it at your feet. in episode 4 theres a weapon that shoots bouncy balls as ammo that launch you into the air and usually kill you

remember how i said all the weapons were suicidal? yeah pretty much everything kills you in this game. the ion blaster hurts you if you shoot it underwater and you get it in the only episode with major swimming segments. episode 1 also has the c4 launcher, which has such an anemic launch distance and such an enormous blast radius that it will usually kill you instantly in the tight corridors of the sewers. the hammer in episode 2 will kill you. the eye of zeus, if you fire it when nobody is around, will kill you. the cool ass necromancer staff will make a badass pentagram and summon a demon…which will kill you if nobody is around. episode 4’s bouncy ball gun fires bouncy balls in bursts of 3 for no reason which last forever and bounce around so unpredictably that they will probably kill you. theres a thing like snarks from half-life but ROBOTS that will kill you by summoning a laser light show if theres no enemies around

i could write a dozen more posts about every little bit of insanity in the weapon and enemy design, but all of it is engaging and compelling. ive tried to play it with the “fixed” AI companions with the patch, but you still run into issues where superfly’s stupid ass gets stuck on a fucking ladder and you cant progress the game, which was the biggest problem with the AI companions in the first place, but the concept itself was ambitious, and so are the RPG mechanics that daikatana has that are in pretty much every shooter now

i think what really killed daikatana at launch is how fucking buggy it was. the game ran like shit, it crashed constantly, youd have to noclip when scripted events didnt work, your saves would randomly disappear, etc. etc. the AI companions literally didnt work half the time, theyd get stuck on stuff and fucking die way too easily in a game that has hyper-lethal enemies - they were useless. the save system also sucks, limited saves in a game that constantly fucks up and kills you or crashes is a real killer

if it had run properly it would be remembered as a flawed but interesting shooter with a terrible first section, a terrible story, cool texturework and some fun ideas

The problem with Carmack is mostly how he’s been idealized as a lone-genius white-man 10x programmer. Jeff Dean is another engineer who got the same treatment – in contrast, I see Dean pushing back against the stereotype in public and emphasizing his best work was all a collaborative effort and his support for diverse hiring. Whereas Carmack seems happy to roll with it and “humbly” accept his stature.

I am very sorry to have goaded you into all this text, there is no way I can adequately pay it back especially when all I can say is something like So Yeah, You Admit It’s Bad

if something is flawed in an interesting, ambitious or enjoyable way its actually good to me, so i dont think thats what i was saying at all!
