ILL BE YOUR DREAM ILL BE YOUR WISH ILL BE YOUR FANâUHSY
someone on this very forum had a hyper-extensive thread devoted completely to Life Tastes Like Cardboard, a free game from a few years back, which they constantly updated with illustrations and diary entries. canât find the thread anymore so i donât know if itâs gone now or not.
also BABBDI came out about a year and a half ago and i recall it getting a lot of attention.

RPCS3 stands for Russian Personal Computer Station 3.
â RPCS3 - Blog
The weirder part of it:
Then at some point DH who is from Ukraine started saying the R stood for Russian which is what we roll with today as Nekotekina who joined in late 2013 and quickly became one of the biggest developers and the architect, is from Russia. So RPCS3 stands for Russian Personal Computer Station 3.
i read this a few days ago, and iâve been thinking about it a lot since
Pretty great. ^ _^
Senior Gamest editor Zenji Ishii: America is the place where real street fights take place, after all.
Ishii: Which characters do they like to play in America?

Thinking about Cave Story, a huge part of it was that it was optimized to fit on a single floppy disc at a time when everybody still had them. Cave Story didnât require internet access at all, and especially did not require an account on any services to get a hold of. If you knew somebody who had it, you pretty much had it. Thatâs gone now in the steam era.
i know right! it sucks!!!
The Roottrees are dead is a relatively recent one that made quite a splash.
cave story was one of the games i installed day one on my first pc long with warning forever, dan da dan, super mario pac, and an azumanga daioh doujin fighter
The PS3 era was a rough one for 2D games; developers still thought the audience wouldnât be able to bear un-blurred low-res pixels.
i feel like free games are still made and played by the same group as ever - that is, kids and college kids with no money, low-end computers and time to kill - and itâs just that theyâve been totally ringfenced and split off as a seperate economy from that of âpremium gamesâ (pc/console and also the free indie games that loosely exist within the pc/console tradition). similar to what happened to phone games in general but maybe even more invisibilised and at the mercy of weird platform economy rules - like the fiercely enforced distinction between âyoutubeâ and âyoutube kidsâ.
the game âgrannyâ has 100m+ downloads but i only found out about it by being morbidly curious about the lowpoly polygonal ghoul creature hanging out with elsa and pregnant spiderman in those childrenâs videos⌠and even then it was hard to figure out what the source was, bc the actual origin was kind of lost in a swirl of roblox remakes and dance videos and spam websites, granny4u.game playrealgranny.cz grannyinyour.area. even moreso than most games, information on these things is left to the whim of the seo market.
i actually donât mean this to read like âdonât worry we still have free games and theyâre more popular than ever :^)â hah. itâs grim to me that the traditional base for all the real experimental stuff in vgames - like, yume nikki was passed around between HS kids looking for oddities long before it possessed officialised artgame cred, iirc - has been locked down by platforms that are both hyperexploitative and also so puritanical and infantilising, hostile to any attempt to break out of their system or to develop beyond a target age group, while the remnants of ye olde free game culture are sort of left flopping around like beached fish as a result. iâm sure life finds a way and that thereâs a barkley gaiden or life of d duck of roblox obbies somewhere nevertheless, maybe even with their own bands of devotees, maybe thereâs already a new cave story. how would we know?

I feel like the reason weâre putting Cave Story on a pedestal is because it looked Legit. Cave Story looks like a cousin of Gunstar Heroes, and you could buy Gunstar Heroes in a ToysârâUs. Every time one of these indie hits has blown up and stayed popular its because theyâve been able to compete against the classics on equal ground.
