In 2009, LucasArts noticed that a grassroots aesthetic movement called indie games was becoming popular, so they attempted to make their own “indie game” from the outside looking in. The result was an offensively boring looking 2D illustrated platformer called Lucidity.

Obviously today indie games have been fully subsumed into the mainstream and enclosed by big capital, but looking at this game now is to see a weird, failed prototype of that; a time capsule of what indie games looked like through a corporate lens a couple years prior to Indie Game: The Movie:

  • Moody children’s book art style
  • Bereaved young girl protagonist
  • Kind of a slow-paced Canabalt autorunner with an attempted One Clever Mechanic (1CM - thanks @ellaguro) where you place platform pieces in front of you as you go

I remember it annoyed me at the time, like a really obvious “how do you do fellow kids” manoeuvre. Little did I know what was to come over the following decade.

◆About the Video
This is an early development video of “ICO” for PlayStation 2, released on December 6, 2001. It was made around 1998 to share the image of the game with the development team. The team, including Ueda, had no idea what kind of game “ICO” was going to be, and were groping in the dark. The video contains some defects in images and sound, such as scanning lines and noise, as well as debugging indications, but we dared not to correct or edit them in order to let the audience feel the atmosphere of that time.
Main features of the video
The video is a combination of CG and images of the first PlayStation.
Production environment: SoftImage for motion, Lightwave3D for modeling
The image of Yorda is different from the production version.
The image of Ico is different from the production version.
◆About the music
At the time (late 1990s), it was rare to attempt to use popular music for games, not exclusive music, and to use existing music. The music was selected from CDs that happened to be on the desk of Fumito Ueda, the game designer and director of “ICO”.
Two of the songs that became turning points were “Summer Holiday 1999” by Momus, which is used in this video. The other song is “Scarborough Faire” by Simon & Garfunkel, which was used in the first presentation video after the development transition from the original PlayStation to PlayStation 2.
The other song is “Scarborough Fair” by Simon & Garfunkel. Both of these songs matched very well with the images we were developing, and they are memorable songs that gave us a sense of responsiveness to what we were creating.
And for the production version, we were fortunate to have Michiru Oshima in charge of the music, and she created many great songs for us. Among them, “ICO-You were there” is an irreplaceable song that shaped “ICO” for us.

Though, I think it works better with the song from ICO. I’m not much into Momus, I suppose.
