Every once in a while I think about Starr Mazer, a game that blew up on kickstarter and I saw get really prominent and then they released an early access “part one” demo with 3 levels, that was eventually meant to have 2 more expansions before being rolled into the larger game, and that was back in 2017??

I think about how that game had a huge booth at PAX South and I never knew if it came out or not.

i saw Starr Mazer at a pax, I think at an Adult Swim booth. I also remember UFO 50 being at like a 2016 or so Pax and wonder about it from time to time.

main thing i remember about starr mazer is one of the artists coming out a couple years back to talk about how awful it was working on the project and how intolerable the director was
also, the official descriptions of the game now set off a bunch of red flags on my sexism detector
tangentially related to this, but i often think about how these neo-retro games feel like they take 2-3 times longer to develop than actual retro games did back in the day. there’s probably a hundred reasons for that but it still feels very weird.

The people who made the original games had a ton of experience making games like that.
And they didn’t have to waste a lot of time trying to be cleverly referential.
And generally they were making them for much simpler hardware (and software) and player expectations.

I believe Don Thacker, the guy who was running that project and whose behavior was called out by that artist a few years ago, is now the guy who puts together all the Devolver Digital E3 parody press conferences

yeah, I was thinking of making a Rad-Racer like, and the original game is literally like 8 stages with the same cars, so all one really had to do was sequence the turns and tune the checkpoint timing.
