videogame things you think about a lot lot lot lot

I’m imagining that right now … “wow,yeah!”

it just occurred to me that I’ve more or less successfully waited out the entire PS5 generation while continuing to use an 11 year old PS4 as a glorified Apple TV, so I can probably look forward to buying a PS6 just for convenience’ sake to maintain backwards compatibility as surely the peacock app will not still be maintained for PS4 at that point

also the fact that despite feeling like I avoided buying a console this generation, I will have gotten an analogue pocket, a GPU, a playdate, a switch 2, a steam frame, and a PS6 all in consecutive years, so maybe not that impressive

The PS4’s CPU is dogshit slow at single-threaded workloads like JPEG decompression and HTML layout, so you may have been underestimating how much faster a contemporary $50 streaming box is at browsing Netflix menus than that once-futuristic console

it’s true but what if I have a passing desire to play Witcher 3 or P.T.? I haven’t, granted, but I did only finish God of War Ragnarok like a year ago. and if I insist on keeping a PlayStation-compatible device hooked up, it’ll be an even bigger upgrade when I can finally justify a new one (PS6)

also the Apple TV app itself and only the Apple TV app is somehow miraculously well optimized on PS4, I don’t know if they have their own multithreaded Swift UI compiler target or what (probably) but it is surreal to see the menus run at 60fps on there. like oh right this should be the norm

it helps that a) the 9070 is one of the first credible midrange GPUs in years (in that it has remained available at MSRP and meets essentially all recommended specs by doing the time honored thing of coming out in the middle of a console generation and being about 3x as powerful as the baseline console) and b) neither Santa Monica or Naughty Dog’s new thing seem likely to ship much in advance of being a cross gen situation (plus I’ve still not gotten to play the new Astro Bot) so it feels like there will actually be something to buy instead of nothing

the Switch 2 upgrades have genuinely made the handful of Switch games I bought since about 2023 and didn’t quite finish much more appealing so I’m feeling charitable toward delayed enhancements

This is me except I’ve avoided all the Switches figuring I’ll eventually pick one of them up on the cheap some years down the road and yet they somehow cost more than ever :\

Nintendo increased the North American price for the Switch 1 models because of tariffs.

I mean… yes, but it also happened around the same time a console would get a price cut so I think it is as much “because we can get away with it” as anything.

All the European gaming YouTubers talk about Shadow of the Beast like it’s the pinnacle of graphics when it simply has way too many parallax layers.

Whenever FFXIII-2’s PSO inspired loading screen (a lot of PSO in this) goes to 60FPS for a second I go “that looks nice” I get to “tha-” before it drops again, just like PSOs!!

This dude, the first boss of Star Fox 64, goes down SCREAMING about how he has FAILED HIS EMPEROR, then the core detonates everything in quarter mile radius.

THAT is how you meet your end at the hands of a hated foe. THAT is how it is done. THAT is professionalism. I am ever inspired by how this guy must be dragged to hell screaming. I am moved by this NOTHING boss’s incredible passion.

And the people NEVER speak of him, simply because he “sucked ass” and “failed his emperor.” He OWNED IT. He NEVER HID THIS. FUCK YOU.
