What is the context of this smelly old man post

it’s in the youtube comments of a video of some guy named Retro Rick

the retro videogame youtube sphere has always really amused me in a sort of irony-poisoned way. and the vibes have def been very off since the pandemic pushed used game prices way up since a lot of these guys basically exist as monuments to Game Collecting

Wonder why gamers always try to recreate a game store inside their homes

The insatiable need to create a gamestop in the living room

i think a lot of these guys never got over the childhood fantasy of wanting to own the entire game store. like their primary aspiration for adulthood was finally being able to do the Toys R Us Super Toy Run.

the thing is these retro guys are all aging - it’s mostly guys in their mid to late 40’s and mostly focused on the NES, which is why that comment on Retro Rick’s channel is funny. i think once you get to my age (late 30’s) and younger you start to get more people who experienced the SNES and NES generation primarily through romsets than childhood memories of game rentals at the video store. also another big reason why these guys are dying out is they usually like the same 10-15 pieces of media and don’t have anything interesting or insightful to say about them whatsoever.

I do enjoy the existential schadenfreude of watching Game Chasers

i have a friend like this. only plays nes games. they would play the Willow nes game and complain there’s no rpgs but would refuse to play Dragon Warrior or something. they are modding a GameCube and asked me for game suggestions so maybe I can pull em out of the dark ages

was the same here, except it’s not so fun now that one of them (Billy) died suddenly of brain cancer a couple months ago. now it’s just sad. haven’t known how to feel about all of that since.

what! I didn’t know about that, that’s really sad.

yeah it was very sudden. i found out via a creepy video Billy had suddenly posted to the channel about being at the ER, and then he was dead like 2-3 weeks later. they did a tribute video about him on Jay’s channel which was weird for me to see but given the decade i spent psuedo-hate watching the channel was maybe nice to watch to get some closure.

also this whole thing reminds me of the common talking point about how the audience for 90’s alt rock diverged into either nu metal/butt rock or arty indie rock. the guys who grew up with retro games who didn’t get into indie games inspired by those retro games because they found them too arty or pretentious all seemingly started a retro game youtube channel instead lol.

Welp, RIP Billy.

yeah it’s a very sad anticlimax to (even ironically) be invested in the exploits of people for over a decade and then to just have it abruptly end for good. it’s not like you can even explain it to other people. like i’m sad more people haven’t heard the band Olivia Tremor Control who were very formative to me after both principal members died but at least i can still send other people their music and it’ll make sense. i don’t know how to do that for a youtube channel i’ve been pseudo hate watching that can never really be watched the same way again after this lol.

in turn, i knew a lot of people who were into nu metal as teens, and the two paths out of that were either becoming juggalos or getting into more respected metal genres.
