On that note I played through all of Xenogears not understanding Grahf’s portrait. I thought he was facing left with his robot mouth wide open, and the white parts on the left were
below: his tongue going upward (with a bit of robot-spit on his robot-lips below)
above: snot from his robot nose. Like the Warioware allergy girl
I did not understand why such an edgy badass was so gross
I know what he’s meant to look like but I really can’t imagine anyone seeing it as anything but snot. Also the lower white part is his upper lip. He looks incredibly stupid.
It’s a pretty cool design, the lowres cropped ingame portrait is just very unfortunate. I don’t understand why they didn’t use a different picture.
I have to say though, seeing the goofy snot face, knowing it must be wrong but being unable to make sense of it any other way, that was honestly pretty disturbing so it works out quite well narratively.
the actual design is pretty cool but i wish all of you were right. can u imagine a badass roboknight with a hood ornament and snot dripping out of his nose thats next level character design right there
People rag on Star Citizen a lot for “never releasing” when the level of detail in that game is pretty high. It’ll never get to a 1.0 release but honestly what’s there is pretty impressive. I don’t really understand the hate, it’s not like these people who got a preorder 13 years ago - who can play the game as it is now - are getting ripped off.
I was a hater too, until I saw a random youtube video of someone driving a vehicle on a planet surface, then driving it into the bay of a ship, and then the ship takes off into space. The whole thing is a bunch of simulated physics objects in a network environment somehow not glitching into each other.
There was another video where a guy had a wanted level and in order to get rid of it he had to break into the database on a planet, but to get THERE he had to hack a satellite that would warn of his approach, so to get around this he did a fucking 20 minute spacewalk to try and get it undetected, but he failed and went to the planet anyway, then got caught, then got stuck in the mines for like a few hours to work off his sentence. it was actually kind of compelling.
I might get into it myself, I am interested in what 13 years of fully funded development looks like to be honest.
This is really where im at on it. if it was a scam it would not be like a playable game the way it is. like 50% of steam early access games are functionally abandoned and barely playable which i think is way more of a scam. the star citizen people seem pretty happy with their jpegs and jank game.
I don’t know why people act like it’s some big scam or con or get mad about it, seems like it’s pretty sincerely trying to carry on the ultima-esque simulationism torch, and that’s what it costs and takes at modern fidelity levels. I think he originally just wanted to make another freelancer type thing but everyone wanted another eve online too. also it’s funny the original design document for wing commander calls it squadron and it goes on about it’s 3d raytracing. good for chris roberts still keeping the dream alive I guess
i think a lot of it is honestly a leftover meme from the peak of the not really playable jpeg ship buying frenzy/derek smart media controversy era
i have bought multiple games in the time since they announced star citizen that ended up never finished lol. well see if my ground branch blind faith ever pays off though that game is probably equally playable already
my favorite semi-abandoned steam early access game, Maia, is a videogame I think about a lot
a time capsule back to when people just took their games out of early access so you couldn’t complain that it wasn’t finished when they abandoned it. so much potential here in a 1970s inspired hard sci fi colony sim that it’s almost taunting that the developer keeps updating it once randomly every few years. which ends up always being totally inconsequential because it’s barely functional as a game every time I play it no matter what he does to it
My “Boy I Hope This Game Doesn’t Become Abandoned” game is Titan Chaser, which had to be put on hold as the developer attempts to stop Russia from annexing his country.
Picking Aerith and then going on that date with her at the Golden Saucer felt like the future to me. I couldn’t believe you do this type of thing in a game.
