In short Select Button came from the dead ashes of the original Insert credit and Tim Rogers frequented these parts long ago

He made a good batch of videos for Kotaku. I think about the Xenoblade 2 review sometimes

The first two action button vids made me nauseous because of all the praise for perfectly calibrated and paced AAA games so I never finished them, but the Doom one was great yes

Oh no now we have to teach once again the Rogers canons and anti-canons

I was just gonna let it float down the river.

but yes once upon a time there was insertcredit.
It was a page started to get into E3 in the early 2Ks.
It attracted a lot of personal writing about video games, mostly an unheard of style at the time. Tim was among the early contributors. New games journalism.
The website had a forum that sort of grew apart from the website. It was also very verbose and sort of intimidating.
It burned down.
It was rebuilt.
An often banned, widely hated, forum troll, facist and actual criminal scammer made friends with the site owner and got made admin.
He delighted in making everyone miserable and banning people for not liking it.
Someone called in a 4chan raid, they filled it with unspeakable images and crashed the site.
The Gamers Quater forums became the forum life boat. Plans were discussed.
Selectbutton.net was registered by Toups.

sb1 and sb2 take place in adult timeline, while the later iterations of ic take place in the child timeline.

I should have studied my history. Thank you all for variously educating me, I just kind of wandered into this forum lol

now i’m connecting dots and things are making sense :eyes:

also ive heard if you post the names of certain ikea furniture in threada they described as if they are a wizard you should try it out

i really feel kind of like a jerk whenever stuff like this happens, sorry if it’s off putting. i think eventually we will probably all get over it

but i think i speak for all of us sbolds that we definitely do not think it is ā€˜you’ who are weird for not knowing this stuff, it is ā€˜us’ who are weird for being like the greybeards of some kind of video game forum saga

No worries here! It was pretty weird to see everyone react in a way I couldn’t explain, but I didn’t think it was unfriendly or didn’t have its reasons. I think I get the feeling, anyway.

all of this happened before i joined or followed any of these sorts of communities and i feel like i’ve been around online games world forever. i only just heard about this history like a few months ago or so when i asked someone here what the history was. (i joined sb in 2010 or 2011, probably less than a year after i joined tigsource…i missed pretty much all of the ā€œnew games journalismā€ era and only caught the tail end of the indie games boom thing… but i was on the website OC Remix for many years in the early 00’s i guess. also i submitted a piece of writing that took me months to write to insert credit in 2011 that i never heard back on…but i ended up posting a lot on my blog after that lol). i also know several people from The Gamer’s Quarter in spite of never having been on that site or really knowing what it even is. some of this stuff really did happen so long ago!!

my internet history pre-2010 was taken up with a lot more mind-numbing and far more uncool online communities (i.e. the previously mentioned OC ReMix) than select button or insert credit are as far as videogames are concerned. i did somehow know of Tim Rogers’s writing in 2005 years before i knew of insert credit or select button due to his widely shared Earthbound piece though. and then when i rediscovered his writing years later when everyone on the internet was making fun of his Kotaku piece about what he hates about living in Japan, i found action button, then select button, etc.

There used to be an archive of the 2005/2006 era insert credit forum before the ā€œEventā€ the killed it but either I’m checking the wrong link or it’s not up anymore.

I try not to romanticize the past despite doing it a lot when I was younger. These days I’m glad all the web forums I posted on in the late 90s/early 00s are all gone and no longer accessible (often even from archive.org (maybe someone like NSA still has copies though)).

Sometimes though I think it is useful or fun to go back and see the path you took or where you came from. Kind of for the same reason I enjoy looking at old photos of my parents’ and grandparents’ lives from before I came long (not enough of those anymore these days either).

yeah i think the point of my rambling was mostly being kind of amazed with all the stuff that happened years before i was even remotely conscious of any of this stuff, esp when me being first aware of action button/select button seemed so long ago to begin with

what do you like about it?

It is a relief that this is happening again. For a long time the idea that anyone here wasn’t always here was kind of unthinkable, and it sucked.
