Do any of y’all own UHDs? Are there any movies you want on UHD?
Yeah like I need something else to buy.

i did not purchase it but the 4k of hard target is beautiful and a great time
billy lynn’s long halftime walk. first uhd I bought after we got a 4k tv
Sometimes I’ll get a UHD from Vinegar Syndrome or Arrow if the price isn’t that different. Sometimes they’ll also go on sale to the point that, OK, sure.
But mostly…nah.
The biggest draw is that they’re all region free.
I only have a couple. I think 2001 was my first, and my copy of the good Mario movie just arrived (I haven’t popped it in yet). On my set up so far it’s nowhere near the jump dvd to bluray was though. I did a bunch of research to source a player that supported the slightly older hdr implementation of my tv and I’m not sure how critical that is with how the discs themselves work.
the work vinegar syndrome is doing absolutely rules and I admire them so much (they had a table set up at monsterpalooza here a couple weeks ago) but it’s way way way easier to torrent UHD transfers (as I have been doing since I got my 4K projector 7 years ago) than bother with the media
My only UHD capable player is my Xbox One S, which is…miserable at playing any sort of media.
But yeah I forgot the region free part. Why pay Shout Factory out the ass for individual John Carpenter movies on UHD when the UK has a whole set of them for like $40.
I don’t have a 4K screen and I have no plans to get one,* but I do have a handful of UHD discs that I bought either because they didn’t cost much/any more than the normal Blu-ray or because they are fancy editions of movies I like. (I can play them on my PS5.)
As for future purchases, I will likely pick up that new version of UHF that’s coming out next month. And Furiosa.
* I recently learned that if I’m ever forced to get a new TV the thing to look for is a “commercial display” because those are the only ones without any “smart” features these days.
fwiw, I recently got a hisense uhd TV after only having had a non-smart uhd projector and no TV for the past 7 years*, and I was really impressed that the only physical button on it was a hardware mute switch for voice commands, which alleviated a big chunk of my distaste for smart features
^technically the last rental we were in for a little while 4 years ago had one, which taught me that I wanted a Google and not a Roku
buy the UHD of Gemini Man so you can see half of Ang Lee’s 120 fps fever action dream
just like, set the disc on A-B Loop on the part where they shoot the minigun at the store
also hey, the Belladonna of Sadness 4k disc just dropped
this is why i got long halftime walk
since Satoshi Kon’s movies had BR releases that were out of stock for a long time, jumped at the chance to get the 4K releases of Millenium Actress and Paprika earlier this year, though did not watch them yet.
Those two aside, the few other 4K discs i have:
Decision to Leave
Mad Max Fury Road
Donnie Darko
Dunc 1 (2020ish versione)
soon: Dunc 2 (2024)
… and i guess that’s it? Have to check when i am back home.
Oh yeah, I have the 84 Dune on 4k and it looks great
Postal 4K Blu-ray (4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray) the format might be worth it now
my uhd remux folder is already a third the size of my entire 1080 rip collection. they need to invent 100tb hdds soon
I buy 4K discs mostly if the price is right. I don’t really replace discs I already own on blu ray unless I really love the movie and it’s on sale.
studios: why aren’t people adopting UHD discs
also studios: we should charge 40 bucks for UHD movies
Paramount is dropping/has dropped a bunch of catalog 4k discs for 12-15 bucks a pop and they come with BD and DVD copies and I think it’s insane that the format is nearly a decade old and someone finally went “what if we sold them for less money?”
like, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that you should buy and sit down and watch Hunt for Red October or Cloverfield or Beverly Hills Cop (this is not a critical assessment on any of these films)
but you can literally go to amazon and buy a copy of these movies with THREE FORMATS in the case for eleven bucks
If I have any UHD discs, they came in a bundle with the cheap vanilla blu-ray off like slickdeals or something. No actually UHD player, but I believe my LG external PC BD-Drive can rip them with some hacked firmware now that I think about it.
every release paramount likes to just flip a coin on whether they’re gonna put out a dogshit (once upon a time in the west) or good (chinatown) uhd
