UFO 50

Bushido Ball and Big Bell Race are 2/3 of the games I’ve actually managed to beat first try out of like 20 I’ve tried, it’s cool how people experience these so much differently!

my brain is mostly wired for puzzle games and slower paced stuff instead of twitch action games at this point - especially of the less forgiving NES style variety. i get really stressed out when i have to do any sort of boss battle.

It is interesting to see different parts of all these games appeal to different people. Improves my overall view of the game, seeing that it appeals to a broad spectrum, because I keep getting annoyed at having about a 50% miss rate with the games.

pretty funny that the first game i tried, #50 on the list, might as well be five different games itself

Press start and check out the controls. Sometimes that helps a lot.

i’ve spent about 20 hours playing 18 games (in a random shuffled order) and i’ve only really disliked 2 or 3 of them so far? i think it helps that i’m recording them, so i force myself to spend some time with them even if i don’t understand them at first. i have always had a very broad taste in games, though, and NES games are literally what i grew up on.

yeah I also started playing games on an NES and basically sated my interest in its library via emulation in the 2000s so this is meeting my own demands for novelty impeccably well

Porgy has many elements that make it seem like exactly the type of game I’d enjoy so I keep returning to it, but I’m finding it kind of miserable to play.

When I step back and think about it, though, I like the idea in the abstract of making slow progress and collecting powerups to venture a little farther each time. I think I’d have more patience for it and appreciate it more if it weren’t one of 50 games and if I didn’t also have a lot of other games beyond those 50 competing for my video game time.

Kind of funny that the UFO 50 games resemble those from an era when a lot of us had just a few games and would thoroughly explore each one, even the bad ones, but bombarding you with 50 all at once makes it difficult to approach them with that sort of mindset even as it triggers a memory of that time.

I haven’t played Porgy myself yet, but watching somebody play it yesterday just made me want to revisit Solar Jetman.

I like Mortol a lot but it sure is unforgiving.

I beat about 10 of these now. I think Mooncat might be my new favorite, it’s the one that takes the most risks, leaves the most unsaid and feels like it really transcends its influences. It lures you in with chill, quirky vibes, then gradually adds frustration and disgust as ingredients for its strange aesthetic.

loving rail heist, pingolf, and magic garden the best so far.

camouflage would’ve been an upsetting full price game when i was a kid, but it’s really excellent as 1 of 50

found out according to wikipedia that Spelunky composer Eirik Suhrke designed both Mooncat and Warptank. just adds to my feeling that more musicians should be doing gamedev - feels like it’s been extremely programmer + visual artist heavy as primary discipline in indie games.

also i played quite a bit of Rail Heist. after some initial struggles i got really into it. the design feels both idiosyncratic and detailed in the way you’d want. it’s probably my favorite along with those other two i just mentioned.

Liz if you like Uurnog Uurnlimited you should try Mini & Max. It’s not as good but the resemblance will eventually become noticeable.

This video is real cool if you don’t want to suffer through the game yourself. All annotations! No talking! THE WAY THINGS SHOULD BE.
