I don’t think lost highway ever got a “lynch approved” bluray yet

maybe we’ll just get a 4k lynch boxset or something

the illusion that Cooper was the sort of fellow who would name his tape recorder has been shattered

Interesting, this is an AI upscale job approved by David Lynch.

I don’t want to undersell him, but I wonder if he understands the implications about this re: what restoration actually means, or if he just cares about the picture. In a way, the process of upscaling via “AI” and the imperfections that process introduce seem kind of like something Lynch would be cool with if he were to understand them. Because errors and uncanny impressions are kind of like the materiality of that medium/method when you think about it.

the history of getting theatrical transfers out of miniDV (read: 480i with garbage chroma subsampling) is sufficiently all over the place that almost nothing can be considered really faithful in this context, to be honest. I’d like to see them run it through a retroarch shader or something rather than an AI upscale but there are maybe two people in the world who could consult on that basis and it would be a hard sell for them even.

small thread on the process for this.
shout out to minidv, the best video format.

I’m both bummed and relieved that I didn’t know about this software last summer when I had a stack of DV tapes to do in a hurry.

Yeah, the AI upscale is a weird move. I really hope there’s the SD version as a special feature, but also I feel like that’d undercut the whole Director’s Approved concept. Maybe the DVDs will fall in price finally.

Then again I also want Blue Velvet to get the Repo Man/Mallrats blu-ray treatment and have the famously censored TV cut included. “Poop!”

seems like this could be a mulholland drive situation where the tv project became a feature? but nobody has any idea and that’s very exciting, this must have been so completely locked down in production.

Won’t believe anything until they all of a sudden put a trailer out maybe. TPs3 was put on ice and almost didn’t happen for a bit when he got into a dispute with Showtime over length (?) and the actors recorded those twin peaks without lynch is like x clips

variety don’t report things without some decent level of evidence - at least i can come out of this slightly more positive about them doing Something over the last year or two. ready when it’s ready.

this is probably the most he’s said about dune since it was in production and also interesting to hear how he was basically stuck with the format for inland empire because of how he started out shooting it, not knowing it was going to become a whole movie, and admits he thinks the look kind of hinders the movie
