On further reflection—and after spending a few hours with very brisk, Kemco-published, budget JRPG Bonds of the Skies—I think the battles in Bravely Default II take too long. I think this game will feel like a chore at some point shortly beyond the demo’s five-hour time limit.
I’m no longer looking forward to Bravely Default II.
I’ve been having fun this week. It is breezy and readable and, critically, well-populated so you never have to wait more than a few minutes for a match
Aggressive/strict skill-based matchmaking, too, so you’re not getting domed by a professional TTVer within seconds
Did the matchmaking improve since launch? I tried Apex when it came out, then quit because the consistent “pick up items for 10 minutes -> die the moment I see somebody else no matter how good my equipment is” experience wasn’t doing it for me. I only started to have a bit of fun when I started parachuting into crowded areas to skip the first part, but then I’d just play Quake 3 if I wanted that sort of game
May not be possible for it to improve come to think of it, given that the pool of newbies to pick from is probably smaller than ever, and not every newbie is as bad as I am
I have been matching with people with 0 lifetime kills every other match this weekend because I’m “new” so positive experience on my end. PC population kicked up with the Steam release and it’s cross-platform by default
TTK is also way higher than other shooters I’ve played recently, you just have to get shields and make sure to take time to apply med kits
Apex is definitely one of those games where watching good players’ habits on streams and in videos will actually pay off in game, I had a much more enjoyable time in season 7 because I did that versus back when the game had just launched
I got back into Apex recently after a very long break, and I started playing with two friends who’d never played before. We had a very smooth time getting up to speed, and we were able to gradually improve our skill at the game at a pleasing rate. Their matchmaking seems pretty solid, and the game is still popular enough that you will definitely get in fights with squads who are brand new or just bad at the game.
Mega bump!! Here are my top games of the year so far:
It Takes Two
Hitman 3
The Medium
Little Nightmares 2
Uhhh yeah I expected to have played more games!! Usually I’ll have played enough to make a midyear top 10 list but ya It’s been a slow year and stuff keeps getting delayed… I haven’t played a new game since March. I was gonna play Village but for whatever reason I’m just not interested in that game and its whole setting… ummm
Here’s what I’m looking forward to for the rest of the year if they don’t all get delayed. Most of the stuff that doesn’t have a date yet is looking more and more likely to be 2022 games at this point.
