This year is going to be the year where I play a bunch of old JRPGs despite complaining that games should be shorter. I contain multitudes I guess.
smtv
elden ring
nocturne remaster
radio the universe
ubusuna*
fumito ueda game*
*neither of these will come out next year but im delusional
I would be very surprised if there aren’t some classics in the Playdate Season 1 lineup, nevermind all the reasonable complaints people might have about it

I’m now looking forward to Bravely Default II. I didn’t think I’d want to play it, but the new demo won me over. The story is much more interesting than I expected, and I like how the battle system transposes ATB bars into a fully turn-based affair. The whole thing feels like a pretty good spiritual update of Final Fantasy III DS, which was one of my favourite Final Fantasies.
I really liked Final Fantasy: Four Heroes of Light, but to my surprise I hated Bravely Default. That makes me wonder if they’ll get back to form?
Did they fix winning every non-boss battle by mindlessly Brave 4x?
I never tried the 3DS games, so I can’t compare. There were certainly moments in the demo where I’d think “if that enemy only has that much hp left, I might as well brave x4 and finish this now.” But I don’t think that would carry me through most situations. Anyhow, there are now 3 difficulty levels you can swap between at any point.
It’s probably wishful thinking, but I would love for Highfleet to emerge some time next year.
props for having a protagonist in their 40s
i dunno when Ghostwire: Tokyo comes out but that’s the AAA game that i’m most looking forward to. i thought that game Returnal looked cool too though i have no interest in buying a PS5 or whatever so will probably never play that one.
Radio The Universe - i know this has been developed for a very long time but all signs still point to this being pretty cool!
UFO 50 - i love the idea of a big prestige compilation of a bunch of smaller games like this. maybe a distraction from smaller devs like @Felix said but i dunno! i guess i’d prefer this to a lot else
Deathloop - i like those Arkane games from what i’ve played so i’ll probably play this one. the concept helps it out a lot
that Sable game looks cool but i have a feeling it’ll end up being one of those hip indie games that’s more art direction than substance ala GRIS so i doubt i’ll be in any hurry to play that one unless it does something unexpected. great art direction really just isn’t enough for me at this point
Bloodlines 2 - i guess i should play the first one but all the development shakeups point to it being potentially kind of a mess ala that Ultima Underworld reboot. i guess i should try and talk to Cara sometime and hear about what happened if that is indeed the case.
INDUSTRIA - i dunno just looks cool to me i guess.
Genesis Noir - a rare game i found out about via an E3 press conference that i thought actually looks cool. i have no idea what to expect but i got a good vibe and sometimes it’s just good to trust your feelings.
Gloomwood - no official release date on this one but hopefully it’s 2021. may just look like just a lo-fi immersive sim/thief style retread but DUSK had a lot of good and creative level design and i have confidence in that carrying over pretty well here
The Crimson Diamond - looks like a pretty faithful Laura Bow-style old adventure game. maybe wouldn’t play this one but i kinda hope it does well
throwing Weird West on here since i don’t think i’ve seen anyone else mention it. it’s i guess a top down/isometric immersive sim. i imagine it will be a pretty solid game!
and of course new Resident Evil & Hitman, Elden Ring, BOTW 2 etc but those are obvious and i still haven’t played a lot of the earlier games so will be in no hurry to play those.
edit:
oh cool! i forgot about this. i guess i have a more positive view of Golf Story than you because i really liked that game and played through all of it (a thing i generally do not do with games at all). so will def play this one.
overall it seems like 2021 will probably be a pretty good year for games. and more in line with 2019 than 2020. though who knows how much world events of this year seeped into development and will affect those things.
There was something about it that was offputting but I’ll be damned if I remember exactly what it was. I just thought that the story beats were slightly…weird? I dunno. But yeah Golf Story was a surprise and I did play it like 80% of the way tyhrough
Everyone shitting all over the protagonist wore on me pretty quickly but it’s a fun game otherwise!
i kinda liked that. it just reminded me of stuff like Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy where the main character is this kind of hapless person everyone makes fun of for almost no real reason… like the world comically hostile to you. maybe that’s just something i relate to as a person, lmao.
Can’t believe I forgot to mention Graven, a throwback immersive sim. It had a demo released during the Game Awards (and available only during the Game Awards) that I missed because I didn’t watch the Game Awards. Oh well. It’s coming sometime next year if all goes well.
speaking of nineties pc games maybe we’ll get wrath and gloomwood too. or maybe i’ll just finally play thief 2 and then mess around in rtx quake
edit: oh ella mentioned gloomwood like two posts above me. I may be old as fuck, but in my heart I’m just a 15 year old twitter user. anyway, the gloomwood demo was good, I feel like the worst case scenario for this one is having it fall apart into something bloated and incoherent in the second half after they run out of ideas, which would track pretty well with the source era and leave me satisfied.
here’s another game from some person i follow on twitter that looks bizarre in a good way and comes out (for early access) at the very beginning of 2021:
i forgot to mention this very normie choice that i will probably play eventually because i’m the biggest normie in the world and… i thought the first one was pretty good.
You’re not alone, I’m ready to go hopping around bugtown again
Turns out a PC demo came out a few months ago. Looks and sounds pretty nice.
The hook for the battle system is that every action moves a cursor left or right along a meter. You get bonuses for keeping the cursor within an overdrive zone, and you get penalties if the the cursor enters an overheat zone. Seems interesting, but I’m not sure how well it’ll hold up.
