TWENTY TWENTY ONE: SEROTONIN WILL RETURN

It has slipped to early next year but I want to play Rune Factory 5, it’s been a while since I’ve played one of those

In addition to the above:

Life is Strange True Colors
Metroid Dread
A Little to the Left
System Shock Remastered

oh yeah, cosign the last one

Hopefully there’s some upcoming Annapurna title I’m not aware of that will once again restore my faith in video gaming while also adding a touch of whimsy to my life

Oh yeah, there’s the Outer Wilds expansion!

oh yeah, co-sign that too

Looking forward to finally play Esgaluda 2. I’ll probably hate it.

I most certainly won’t have the time or money to play and get these games, but I am excited for the System Shock remake and Deathloop.

I want to play Black Book, which I think is already out. And I want to play Tetris Effect for Switch. I probably won’t get either game until early next year.

Exhumed and maybe Metroid. Raiden DX too if they get that far with the arcade archives this year. Raiden 1 was released a few weeks ago.

ok let’s see what’d I like this year

many titles were not released

REVIII was hilarious and fun

teardown did not get a full release but is super worthwhile at this point

wildermyth did get a full release and is pretty swell, finally some pleasant-enough tweaks on the modern XCom formula

deathloop was like, the best kind of overdesigned

SMTV pretty much met expectations

splitgate is really smooth and enjoyable

forza horizon 5 feels like 3 to me, off the peak of 4 but still relentlessly enjoyable

battlefield and halo didn’t do anything for me either when I was prepared to like them

hitman 3 was solid, solid, solid

tremendously weak year in terms of anything really essential, I really am wary of the economy of new consoles and game pass and epic giveaways and prestige releases at this point. that said: whatever

Inscryption was good fun, an intentionally broken card game where the constant absurd gameplay twists and turns were the whole point. One of the more successful frog-fraction-likes imo.

REVIII was great, a big stupid short story collection that hit every different note that makes that series shine.

I just started Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye, but already it’s as good as the base game, which was an instant classic.

Dungeon Encounters: Amazing that this thing even exists, and the vibe is so right. Ultra boardgamey minimalist secret-heavy JRPG with silly, beautiful illustrations of characters and monsters, all scored with trans siberian orchestra quality electric guitar covers of random classical songs. Iterated on its core mechanics very well. Largely cozy but unafraid to put you in extremely tense situations.

Cruelty Squad: I’ve only played the first level but wow.

Unpacking shouldn’t but does low-key have some of the best narrative design of the year. Also nails that cozy CD-rom era edutainment pixel art aesthetic so well.

Deltarune Chapter 2 was not as good for me as chapter 1 but I still enjoyed it. It’s Toby Fox playing the hits. Sort of felt like he’s been treading the same ground now for just a little too long. I’d like to see him try something new.

Deathloop: Rare that I enjoy a AAA shooter this much. Great all around, not a lot to say that others haven’t.

Roguebook deserves a shoutout as my favorite Slay the Spire imitator of the year, but it still can’t hold a candle to the real thing.

Metroid Dread is fine, which is more than I thought I would say for it.

Pig Detective and the Beast of Boffington Teaser Demo is the greatest possible game to discover in ps4 Dreams at your friend’s house and spend a completely enraptured hour just losing your mind playing through it together. I need to make a Pig Detective thread, this shit is unreal. It’s amazing to see ZZT energy this pure in a 3D engine with full voice acting.

Oh shit and I almost forgot!

Returnal is GAME OF THE YEAR 2021, the best 3D Metroid game, a triumph, and they even added a save feature finally.

Hitman 3 was a bit of a let down coming immediately off of 2. I liked 2’s more vicious writing. “This time it’s personal” doesn’t work for me with 47.

Village made me laugh out loud.

Deathloop made me groan out loud.

Psychonauts 2 was grating to me but true to itself and I respect it for that.

Metroid Dread has a terrible control scheme so it gets like a did not compete but it seems cool.

Destiny 2 really went for it on the TV serialization this year, including coincidentally running a story about a refugee crisis over the summer that felt cathartic like New Colossus.

Boyfriend Dungeon was probably my favorite, though. Can’t beat a Scythefriend that sounds like Shadow the Hedgehog. Or the dance club boss: Dungeon Boyfriend itself.

Have not played, but want to play True Colors and SMT.

  • Monster Hunter Rise: I played this game so fucking much and I loved it, but my Switch broke right after I finished the base game. I might go back to it next year.
  • SaGa Frontier Remastered: Fuck yes this game owns so much. I steamrolled through three character stories and felt like I got enough. A rare example of a game I craved that actually managed to sate me.
  • Melty TL: disappointing first impression and disappointing lasting impressions. It’s worse than AACC than most ways I can think except for combos being very easy, but that’s like, still a minus for me.
  • Inscryption: I wish this was a physical card game that I could play with my friends. The part where I had to play a video game against an AI got really tedious. Act 3 was like a few straight hours of “yeah, I get it.” Except I had “gotten it” by the end of the first act. Just let me play the full card game, with all of the mechanics, against humans. Please.
  • RE8: Very fun movie to play. That there was even any combat in the game felt like a contrivance of the medium. This should have been a first person adventure puzzle game like Myst, but maybe that’s too radical an opinion.
  • Mario Golf: Lol

Edit:
SMTV is the winner GOTY ruining my life

Pleasant surprise of the year, for me, was Hot Wheels. Had no business being any good at all, but it is.

That might be it
