i feel like SNES era is when i started going to/noticing a LOT of Blockbuster Videos. before that, we had a local independent shop that had difficult to find (at the time) things like 1970s Spider-Man TV show and the Transformers movie and some thing i think was anime about some small children and their robot friend who has a functioning robotic heart (i have no idea what this is or how to search for it - in my memory, it was visually similar to Twinbee?). all viewing experiences that made me feel weird and uncomfortable and which were probably very formative
then there was West Coast Video, and then i remember seeing commercials for Blockbuster Video before actually encountering one a somewhat short time afterwards.
no one seems to have nostalgia for Hollywood Video, the WCW to Blockbusterās WWF/E
i think nostalgia for Blockbuster is weird because it was palpable how much no one enjoyed working there
and while itās fun to reminisce about standing around in a Blockbuster for 1 - 2 hours with your friends trying to pick a movieā¦i definitely remember feeling kind of annoyed at the time lol. but mostly it served as a place a group of teenagers could go in the suburbs that didnāt cost money and wasnāt a parking lot
mythic quest is fun when itās dripping with contempt for videogames (writes itself) and leaning into gleefully evil characterization
it is bad when it is sentimental and it is often sentimental. i am totally baffled when they try to be credibly sincere, like pumping the brakes on itās always sunny to do the weepy bits of community
honestly rob mcelhenney dressing up like jack dorsey is just really fucking funny
Eveyoneās just nostalgic about the last time they hung out with actual people in actual flesh life and not like group watching netflix all in our own rooms with headphones on
So I also noticed that they have real posters for the mummy and king kong in the set, but fake the mummy DVD boxes. Also itās apparently produced by Universal
Also they had a fake box for a movie called āmomentoā
I still think about how much I enjoyed Bust Down this year. Not really Always Sunny or Seinfeld but a third thing in the same vein. Such a specific brand of surreal broke Black millennial nihilism. Jak Knight was such a genius in it, such a shame he wonāt get a chance to blow up the way he should have.
Ah man, this may be the only time I havenāt found Martin Starr attractive. Boo. Despite my doubts, I will probably end up trying to watch this. Love that Roman/Kyle bro-ship
like i was seriously wracking my brain trying to figure out what the twist could possibly be, given that it would not be revealed from the abs down. and literally thatās the only thing i can think of. they must know the contestants. and the only people they would know that would make them say What The Hell would beā¦
