Part Eight Notes

In this latest ep, the Tuskegee Airmen are sent on what is essentially a suicide mission.

They are to strafe radio stations deep in German territory, in France, 480 miles away. That means a 960 mile round-trip, and the max fuel range of P-51s is 1000 miles (before munitions are added), so essentially they’ll fall “hundreds of miles short.”

The commander is like, “You’re right, this is going to be close, but it’s not impossible. Use every bit of gas in your tanks. Try to make it back to allied territory, someplace. We’re going to get you IDs, so if the Germans don’t get you as soon as you land, you might be able to blend in with the population.”

And they go ahead with it because they have to. Most of them are taken down during the operation, some survive and are captured. One of them are interrogated by the Nazis, and we get this scene:

tonight’s curb is an all timer

I watched an episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch last night for the first time since the 90’s. Sabrina needs a date to the school dance, so her mom and aunt teach her how to sculpt and bake an artificial man out of “man dough.” When I selected the episode on Pluto TV, I thought I was going to get a nice lore episode about visiting the witch dimension, but it turns out Pluto has mislabeled their episodes and I got the man dough one.

Sabrina bakes her own date to the dance and names him Chad Corey Dylan. Let me tell you, the random 90’s TV character actor who played this guy put in an all-star comedic performance. He was outshining everyone else on the show by a factor of 10.

The show really dives surprisingly deep into the existential dread inherent in this premise. Like a tulpa in Twin Peaks The Return, Chad Corey Dylan has been manufactured for a purpose – attending the school dance. He has been born sentient and able to speak, and he seems to carry some instinctual understanding of his situation. He knows he only has a brief amount of time to live, and he knows why he’s there.

chad

Chad Corey Dylan is a font of enthusiasm. Upon his creation, he immediately thanks his creators heartily. Imagine giving birth to a baby, and the baby pops out and exclaims “Oh, choice! Thanks doc! It’s great to be here!”

Chad Corey Dylan carries only the knowledge necessary to understand how a school dance functions. Though he knows what he’s seeing, he also knows he’s seeing it for the first time, and he is SO vocal about how happy this makes him.

When they get to the dance floor, he’s like, “I was born for this!” and starts cutting a rug. He has infinite dancing stamina. He’s doing this frantic, aerobic dancing to everything, even the slow dances. Sabrina gets worn out and has to step away to catch her breath while this guy just keeps going by himself.

Eventually Sabrina has to leave for plot reasons, so she sort of halfheartedly sets him up with another girl at the dance just to give him a pleasant last hour of life. I’m not reading into this, she explicitly says this TO him.

Chad Corey Dylan is having such a good time at the dance that he doesn’t want to die. When his time runs out he starts disintegrating into big globules of man dough, but he is not ready. He runs panicked out of the ballroom shouting “preservatives! I need preservatives!” until he melts into a puddle. The puddle spawns a mouth and says some dumb catchphrase and that’s the last you see of the poor guy.

I think this show might be good?

Sometimes I think about how annoying it would be to rewatch LOST, and kind of want to try. I bet you can really blame that show for like 80-90% of the style of TV in the last decade.

It’s true. But there are some things about that show he did The Leftovers that I really, really like. Great performances at least.

i love so much about the leftovers, but i end up finding his style so unbearable when it’s applied to anything less goofy than lost. it’s really frustrating and i think about that show i dislike way too much.
