This just looks so pleasant, Wetrix-like

Started playing this with a bud, doing voices and such and sharing combat. This is a great game.

Dang guess I gotta play through Gunstar Heroes (oh no what a tragedy) in Japanese. Hear about this backstory.

this is neither a romhack nor a translation (it’s a homebrew port) but i don’t think we have a “homebrew port” thread so

https://x.com/ray_castello/status/1882800366406008930

i haven’t played it myself yet, but at a glance it looks like an extremely faithful port

if you don’t know, the arcade version has some bizarre specs that consoles of the time were ill-equipped to replicate directly, so compromises are the name of the game

Arcade: 400 x 254 @ 53.2 Hz (progressive)
3DO: 320 x 240† @ 60 Hz
interpolated to 640 x 480 interlaced by default

this port is using direct asset lifts from arcade MK2, so the playfield feels smaller (since the screen dimensions have shrunk but the sprites haven’t). a bit cozy, but it’s not a dealbreaker imo. i’m not sure how the game speed is handled, i’d have to do a deep dive. the sprites also are a bit “wider” since there’s no aspect ratio correction. no big deal, the sprites in the original arcade game always felt maybe a touch “thin” so this doesn’t feel egregious.

music sounds great. none of the contemporary console releases stood up to the magnificent audio presentation for MK1 and 2, but this homebrew port does the music and SFX justice.

Playing this on the upcoming mister 3DO core is gonna be wild.

i just realized that the only good home port of MK2 (the original delisted Mortal Kombat II for PS3) actually does not respect the original arcade 4:3 aspect ratio and instead seems to use a 1:1 PAR… wild shit. maybe there’s an option to switch it in the settings? the video i saw just had it in a clearly-not-4:3 cutout over a static backdrop.

ok last post about MK2 for now but i determined that the PS3 port does have screen resizing options. i think it defaults to 200:127 DAR (1:1 PAR), but from what i read you can also set to 4:3 DAR for the original aspect ratio.

so i guess that delisted PS3 port really is the GOAT home version. the later PS3 MK Arcade Kollection that precipitated the former’s delisting is apparently a downgrade, but i don’t care to research how at the moment…

What a coincidence, I have a 3DO coming in the mail. Perhaps time to get one of these?

i’ve said it before, but i really think the cp soldier would be a great pad to play stgs with. the way i typically end up holding controllers while playing them, anyway.

Well I’ll play it when it is playable. I should go back to that full Ocarina romhack. It was boring and a stealth mission at the beginning.
