Translations and ROMhacks II

wtf i thought that was barely started? that’s awesome

just as a note - this is an alpha posted to the sega saturn shiro discord on christmas, not a finished patch. hasn’t been tested, stuff like weather isn’t translated, the text is still full width and often overruns the margins, the script hasn’t been edited, etc. i also don’t think the guy working on it wants it circulated outside of the discord.

Super Mario Fratoj nun estas en la ora lango de Shatner.

In this game, the player controls a dignitary and must influence other dignitaries to persuade them. The goal of the game is to convert all of Japan’s clans to the player’s own ideology :talkvoy:. To this end, he can freely roam Japan and talk to anyone he meets to influence them, provided his rank allows it. He may also gamble, study martial arts or philosophy, dig for gold, buy and sell wares or visit various shops.

Political activist simulator ought to be a whole subgenre.

Now I want a game where you play as a temperance activist in the 1910s and you win by enacting Prohibition

I’m reminded of another political activist simulator, Solidarność.

Set in Poland in the 1980s, the player takes the role of the leader of an illegal union, and aims to gain more support in 8 regions than the Communists. The player achieves this through speeches, printing leaflets, organizing demonstrations and strikes. The 8 regions that Poland is divided into are: Pomerania, Northeastern (areas of Warmia, Mazury and Podlasie), Greater, Mazovia, Lower Silesia, Upper Silesia, and Malopolska.[3]

it’s kind of weird that the first version of Ishin no Arashi to be translated is the presumably-condensed NES version, considering it’s one of those Koei games that came out on a dozen systems. Well, ten. Then again, unlike most such Koei games, it skipped the 16-bit consoles, going directly from NES port to PS1/Saturn remakes. Every other version is on a computer of some sort. It also didn’t get any traditional Koei iterative sequels, just sort-of-spin-offs for Windows/PS1 and eventually DS.

(for contrast, the next game under the “Rékoieton” label was Uncharted Waters, which eventually reached some four traditional games, two modern browser/mobile games, an MMO and various lesser online/mobiles games. The considerably more obscure sandbox-lifesim-RPG Taikō Risshiden hit five games, with the first being released on SNES and Genesis. Even one-off Inindo got an SNES release, with an English release. But the brand apparently hit diminishing returns at some point, especially when you consider they pulled the Eiketsuden series out of there like a kid out of school…)

also, of course, hacking an NES game is basically sneezing for some people. Sometimes seems to happen entirely by accident.
I wonder if the original PC-98 version you can buy on Steam for ¥1300 is using a version of the same emulator as when it was “released” for Windows in 2003… probably not, but Koei is always weird in some way.

as long as I’m borderline free-associating, I’d love to see someone tackle Saihai no Yukue, Koei/Omega Force’s attempt to wring the success of Ace Attorney out of the well-bled stone of the Sengoku era:

and far more tangential, reading about the details of Ishin (and Taikou Risshiden) reminds me of Hect’s NES adaptation of Nippon Dexter’s MSX adaptation of Virgin Games’ bizarre video game adaptation of James Clavell’s fictional adaptation of the life of famed navigator/accidental permanent exchange student William Adams.

(This is that game that was developed by Zeque (Kowloon’s Gate) and Quintet).

The game follows the main character, Laika, through a mission to Mars which forces the player to manipulate Laika’s multiple-personality disorder in order to solve puzzles. All the characters in the game have dog heads[.]

I came across an artist with continuing dedication to making fanart of Shiori. The tokimeki memories of this 1994 icon will never die:

And there’s like 100 more sketches of Shiori on their feed
