Translations and ROMhacks II

Aw, looks like it got pulled?

I remember Nintendo Power doing a feature on weird Japan-only games for Nintendo platforms during the late SNES era, and this was the most memorable.

It’s because they submitted a ROM instead of a patch.

The following Atomiswave games:

Metal Slug 6
King of Fighters XI
Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi Kenkakuden (Samurai Shodown VI)

have been converted/ported to the Dreamcast (Atomiswave-specific library calls pointed to their DC equivalents). There are links available in the appropriate threads here: https://www.dreamcast-talk.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=5, but note that the forum is moving veeeery slowly because of outsize interest in these ports

in an ideal world, this would light a fire under certain companies to get their atomiswave games ported to modern consoles, before fans port them to dreamcast.
but it won’t

Hey Just reminded a Rumblefish port was announced like 3 years ago and never materialized.

NeoGeo Battle Coliseum is out for Dreamcast now as well, these things are coming hot and heavy

Anyone know in what state Atomiswave emulation was prior to this?

Somewhat related: Was there any similar project to this but for SEGA NAOMI games?

question 1: pretty good, about as good as dreamcast emulation
question 2: not that i ever heard of

atomiswave is basically just a dreamcast with some hastily rewritten libraries and added arcade functions, sram capabilities, some other minor things

naomi is not the same hardware, it can’t be cleanly ported without some heavy lifting. i think it has way more ram, for example

you could probably port dc to naomi without too much issue but iirc naomi has enough ram to load in everything so nothing needs to stream from the gd-rom - the dc isn’t going to be able to cope with that without rewriting lots of stuff

basically the reason why these things are happening is because atomiswave was just rebranded dreamcast hardware (these games would/could presumably been dreamcast releases eventually had sega not folded its home console division) and the changes that were made have been tracked down through disassembly

Both MS6 and KOFXI regularly freeze on my Dreamcast. Is anyone else experiencing this? Playing on a GDEMU clone.

Haven’t tried SamSho 6 or NGBC yet.

Looks like at least MGS6 might have some issues with nonstandard play methods.

the thread(s) mention(s) similar issues in various configurations. if i’m not mistaken, megavolt is hardware testing with a legit GDEMU with the latest firmware. nothing else is guaranteed to work, and indeed in each game’s case there have been issues with some method or another. i expect the compatibility to get ironed out over time

wow this is a great list!

the theme is romhacks which try to improve things or add QoL features without drastically altering balance or attempting to change core elements. of course each hack is different but it’s a nice list nonetheless

This is so cool! Reminds me of how I tried a lot of launch SNES games and noticed slowdown in every other one. Most of those have patches that solve that problem and I’m considering giving them another go.

Also reminds me that I’ve been meaning to find a good Phantasy Star II improvement hack that makes it faster to play through.

The link to the past video has a chat replay full of people that never played it which is fascinating.
I mean I cant deal with the hack because they “fixed” link’s hair.

The added cut scenes and non-chip sound track are really fascinating. Its like an SNES CD add-on version.

Oh wow I just realized there are tabs for other systems. Jeez o pete.
