the best creature to partner with is… another Alluring Suitor, can’t wait to draft a ton of these and stomp opponent with pairs of immortal twirling handsome lads
my current opinion on master duel after playing it for like twelve+ hours is that it rocks
the crafting system and the rate at which the game gives you currency (at least initially) is very generous and it’s super super realistic to build literally whatever deck you want to play within like, a few hours of launching the game without paying anything. i was expecting the monetization to be way, way more cynical and exploitative and i was honestly pleasantly surprised — i’m already halfway through the battle pass which you can buy with gems, and i have a tcg constructed quality deck, and also the cores of at least three more decks, and also some cute card sleeves and a little buddy and the initial rewards are only now starting to slow down. it’s still exploitative and cynical, it’s just somewhat restrained in that regard and especially when compared to duel links. maybe i’ll change my mind in a week idk. opening packs is really fun so at least they got the fun part of the exploitative part right
as far as like being a platform to play yugioh on it’s really pretty good — there are some things that are really bugging me but none of them have to do with like, how the game looks and feels and sounds because it looks and feels and sounds really good honestly. at least, in the actual game part it does, all the ui outside of that could probably use some work but it’s functional and relatively uncluttered at least. also the solo story mode is cute and the rewards are actually nice which i’ve really appreciated. i probably have a lot more to say about this but none of it’s that important
i honestly forgot how actually seriously good yugioh is and also how fucking awful dogshit bad it is at the same time. it’s really stupid and clowny but also oh my god it rocks
trading card I like: I was looking at Cardfight Vanguard cards and “Treasured Child of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance” is the closest I’ve ever seen another game come to sounding like a Yugioh card. Arguably Battle Spirits goes a for a similar thing all the time, but it’s complete disregard for grammar gives it a different vibe.
Yugioh Master Duel has re-awakened my long dormant interest in TCGs, and now I am compelled to go back and buy decks for all these old games I know of but never tried, even ones that are dead. I can pretend one day I’ll find someone who would want to play with me. If someone wants to play Wixoss, Cardfight Vanguard, Digimon, Luck & Logic, Final Fantasy TCG, Caster Chronicles, Gate Ruler, Flesh & Blood, DragoBorne, or Force of Will via webcam, I am ready.
Or if someone wants to try out all sorts of games via online TCG sims like Untap.in, LackeyCCG, OCTGN, Vassal, Cockatrice, etc., that’s fine too.
I actually just the other day found an old hard drive that had a plugin I made for LackeyCCG for the Evangelion TCG. I dunno how completed it is, but it’s there. I also found plugins for Initial D, Shaman King, Monster Collection, and Maple Story, as well as a Gundam War plugin for OCTGN. Can’t find my huge collection of plugins and card images though. All of these are from like a decade ago so lots of LackeyCCG plugin links are dead nowadays, which sucks because there were tons of obscure and non-English TCGs with English translated plugins. There were so many obscure plugins back in the day that you just can’t find anymore.
(I was super surprised at catching up on Cardfight Vanguard and seeing how it got rebooted last year with an emphasis on making it cheap to get into. Starter decks are 333 yen, or $4-5 in USD. Booster boxes are like $30. It’s kind of crazy compared to what I’m used to from the industry.)
I am also watching card game anime and let me tell you, boy are they dumb. But I’ll never not get a kick out of Battle Spirits showing a scene of one of the main characters committing mass murder followed by a scene of another main character playing a card game, with both scenes treated with the same gravitas.
