Tom's Hardware of Finland

Okay, this is the hardest thing to actually hit if you’re talking about response times. Only TN panels get close but you’re realistically looking at 8ms actual on LCDs.

What size do you have in mind?

my current monitors are ~24", I think possibly 24.5. Somewhere around there so they’re not too mismatched would be cool, but I mean, these specs are pretty much all just ideals, I’m willing to be flexible on most of them

Well. I’ve got a used Dell S2417DG to sell ya.

is installing the Java runtime environment gonna have any impact on the performance or security of my computer while i’m not using any Java programs? this should be a basic question but somehow i’ve gotten to this point on vibes alone

No

hey it sounds like now is the time to buy RAM

Welp think my MSi laptop is on it’s way out. No real problems but when I turn it/wake up from sleep mode the screen freaks out for about 30 seconds so I might as well start looking.

I am probably going to just get another MSi Laptop unless there is a specific reason I shouldn’t. It looks like getting a good laptop with a DVD drive doesn’t exist anymore.

Reminder before someone says get a mac/desktop/external. I don’t even have a desk and I have a 9 month old baby. I need this transfer of hardware to be as painless as possible.

I would also like the keyboard on it to be not complete garbage. I was shocked when I got Lady Rude a laptop last year early pandemic how awful all laptop keyboards were compared to my history of keyboards.

My current one could kind of run cemu/ps3 stuff so figure if I get the now version of what I will probably be able to handle anything I throw at it.

luckily for you this is now the worst time in recorded history to try to buy anything that contains a broadly capable GPU

anyone know what’s with the socks5 shit on nordvpn (I use the transmission with docker thing for public trackers and just qbittorrent with a proxy for private trackers). half my torrents are in the error section on qbittorrent, not connected. before seemed like different torrents would cycle in and out of there, but now half of them are just in there always, including anything recent I download which means I’m getting a bunch of hit and runs. maybe when I first start up the thing, or try switching to a different server, they work for a minute or two.

when I try googling this it’s all stuff from 2020, people saying nordvpn doesn’t even have the socks5 stuff listed, they’re shutting it down, etc. but when I go to nordvpn’s site now, socks5 is the only thing they have listed for proxys.

not much to say other than I use it and it’s about as flaky for me these days, but why do you need it for private trackers? you should be able to connect to those without a proxy.

MSi is a truly terrible manufacturer and even though I know the Japanese retail PC market is awful I would still strongly encourage you to look at Dell or HP. Why do you want an internal optical drive again??

This is a pretty good grab bag of parts and it’s not the “budget” ASUS line so it might not be creaky plastic all the way down.

yeah that is actually not bad

tbqh Intel/Snapdragon/Android have all been so uninteresting lately that I’ve pretty much stopped paying attention to the non-Apple mobile space so I think a grab bag of parts is probably your best bet if you can stick to an OK manufacturer like Asus

This one has a worse GPU but a better CPU in a smaller chassis and “AniMe matrix display” on the lid.

I just wanted to share the AniMe matrix display.

ThinkPad?

Why wouldn’t you get one… still getting good mileage out of my T450s that is a few gen’s old by now, and keyboard is rock solid even though i am 1980ies IBM typing on it.

Internal disc drive might be harder to find than six years ago, but their Workstation laptops did have them back then.

Integrated graphics or else I’d be repping the repairable Surface Laptop 3

what the hell. a surface device you can fix yourself?
They wouldn’t get rid of their main USP after all those years?!?!

What next, a Windows Phone they stick with for a decade? Windows Subsystem for Linux? An xbox4 you actually can buy?

Ripping CDs, watching an American DVD.

okay good so like, not an everyday thing?

obviously, given what I do for a living, I wasn’t saying any form of “why would you ever need one of those,” but rather, “this is a specialized use case you could sit down at a desk for if you had to, given that it would cost you $30 to get an external blu-ray drive rather than undermining your whole product search, right?”
