The story is already weirder
NVidia really hates consoles, huh?
Btw, is it true that the new GPUs will help decode data off SSDs?
i have no need of a 30x0 at this time but i appreciate how enormous gfx cards consistently are these days
The Nintendo Switch rules tho
It’s part of the new DirectX featureset; it allows compressed assets (i.e., textures, the only asset besides sound of any real size anymore) to be decrypted on GPU directly rather than passing through CPU.
there was already an OpenGL extension for this but it was not widely used
and honestly there is like a whole generation’s worth of gains waiting in offloading more and more predictable API calls to GPGPU so I’m hoping this is but one of many
Initial impressions of ray tracing: neat, the projectile is a light source
Impression of ray tracing once I found a puddle in Quake II: holy shit
Does this mean 30-second long elevator rides and “gotta slow down to squeeze through this tight spot or ledge” are finally behind us
is there a u.2 to m.2 cable yet that’s pcie 4.0 and is having a u.2 drive hooked up like that for game storage and a m.2 drive for the os at the same time a thing that will work (on an itx board)
Raytraced lighting is the big one but it’s real subtle. It’s mostly seen in correctly darkening ‘glowing’ sides and areas that should be shadowed.
I had a hard time visually understanding it flipping it on and off in Control but after playing with it for a few hours it looks unconscionably wrong to see the game without it – everything is less grounded, less solid.
Quake II RTX curiously looks like claymation to me; all the enemies are undeniably in the world in a way they aren’t normally, because their lighting is all perfectly coming from their environment, but they remain gormy polygon blobs usually lacking clear art direction.
Minecraft RTX is both extremely ugly and extremely nice. Carving a homestead into a mountainside feels much more embedded as the light gradually turns to umber but the uneasy truce Minecraft has always had with its art style gets worse with more realistic materials.
That Star Wars demo is unreal to see running realtime, it’s a hair’s edge away from high-end offline rendering.
For now I think legacy PC is the storage bottleneck. Mostly this is path-routing behavior because RAM capacities have stagnated and this is now easier/cheaper than trying to fill memory in the background like Naughty Dog does.
Mirror Drop does not benefit from raytraced acceleration but you should play it anyway because it’s beautiful and underloved
and when I visited the creator’s PAX booth to gush about it, 4 months after launch, he shyly said, “nobody I’ve met has heard of this yet”
Looking at sold eBay listings from the past 72 hours and feeling giddy
you’d likely be the second person on earth to own one, so… sure, yeah, go for it!
But do know that nobody will care about your stupi- i mean, bravery for buying an old card just for bragging rights, esp.when you can get a better nvidia product without trying.
But! You can be Vice President in my VEGA64 Owners Club called ‘Burning Watts’.
paying 300 bucks for a V64 would have been funny a few days ago
now, it’s funny but for the wrong reasons
goals
the 3080 though that’ll still fit in a dan a4 right?
like a lifted pinto
far as I can tell
