would just get an se, it’s an iphone 11 (pro?) for £300 without all the bad cruft newer phones have and will be supported + viable possibly until the end of the world at this point
Though this is also arguably true of my Galaxy S3
tell you what pals I couldn’t get that noctua on
so I now have a 3600 on the stock cooler running hotter idle than my fuckin i5 in the middle of a game
this was a fuckin cursed build though let me tell you, the i5 was my first in ~6 years and went smooth, this was a nightmare even with a fancy fractal case
yeah I had a not-great time with the couple of ryzen builds I’ve done for friends here so far, it was my first time having to actually research aftermarket cooling after 20 years of overclocking lol
AMD has never ever ever had more thermal headroom (or, for that matter, tolerance of memory timings) than intel and the fact that intel has slipped so badly lately doesn’t really change that, it just means that when you inevitably buy AMD because the alternative sucks you have to put more effort into the process
oh yeah also running displayport on my main monitor i don’t get any display until windows boots, so no bios unless i run hdmi, any ideas?
getting a bit of buyers remorse on this tbh, my i5 was chugging along fine and this thing runs worryingly hot
depending on your GPU, there may be a firmware update to address that
I get that on my first boot but I can still see the UEFI UI if I go into it and then I can catch the full POST on subsequent reboots
edit: found the exact thing that might be happening to you:
https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4674/kw/firmware/session/L3RpbWUvMTU5NzAwMjk3MS9nZW4vMTU5NzAwMjk3MS9zaWQvZlUxaUd4QlFqb2RpVW4lN0VXSG94JTdFd19NelM5bFNsZTlBSGdJdENtU3lBRHRjMFZ0WmdndXVOeWtzRV9JMCU3RWtncVR0UFFQcHRPNkdRSHRxNDhFOTBiZnAzZ2ZQTXRTTjJsX2I3bmVhQ0NGdTRyM3FPM1AzRXZsSHB3JTIxJTIx
cheers, will try that later
seems weird cos i could see the bios on my previous board via displayport just fine
anyway after hitting 90 on the stock cooler playing halo 3 i repasted and persevered with the noctua install, actually got the darned thing on and i can’t cook eggs on the fucker anymore, wonderful
and yeah that firmware update sorted it, love you
I ebay’d this Lenovo S510 SFF which has an i3-6100 3.70GHz for $140. Its going to be my couch emulation station.
Dimensions are only
(mm) : 90 x 320 x 295
(inches) : 3.5" x 12.6" x 11.6"
I sought this model and cpu out based on this video:
I was pretty surprised what all you can get away with on integrated graphics acceleration and $140. At first I thought that wasn’t going to be enough cores but it looks like most emulation isn’t super multi threaded anyway (if at all) so it shouldn’t matter.
I (likely) get it tomorrow and I’m heck-of excited to get it config’d and hopefully running stuff up to PCSX2 level as well as all my exsting steam stuff. The native VGA will make it a good candidate for a future cocktail arcade build as well.
But not $1399 attracted lol
how many of these things do you think they end up selling? 10? who is the target audience, tech youtubers who didn’t make the press kit list?
I was weirdly into the idea of the Microsoft DS featuring Android but woof that price.
I guess it’s for people who don’t want to carry a tablet or laptop and do a lot of work on their phone? That’s the use case I pictured for myself. But for a lot less money I can just get a new phone and a cheap laptop
$1400 to beta test MS android and they still skimp on all the hardware and give you a small battery
In the grand scheme of things, I know it’s nothing to hoot and holler about, but going from “aw pwease Mistah Apple Genius, install this WAM in my Powahbook” and paying $40 for some snide turd to open a hatch and pop a stick in back in 2005 to, uh, yesterday, opening up my slow as shit and borderline dead 2013 MacBook Air, replacing the battery and SSD and cleaning out a horrifying amount of hair, and getting that up and running?
Feels pretty good!
What doesn’t feel good, though, is Catalina, which was hogging the shit out of the RAM on this thing. I tried to set it up to dual boot, but after a lot of headaches decided “fuck it” and put Ubuntu on it and called it a day.
(I’ve got a USB drive with the Mac OS X installer on it, in case I ever wanna go back and, I dunno, fondly recall my college years or something)
Anyway uhhhh I guess I will see how far I can push RetroArch on this 7 year old laptop. May as well!
Whoops joke’s on me, Ubuntu is using as much, if not more RAM than OS X did, but…it seems to be snappier? I dunno! I’m not attached to this install, I can always try another desktop environment or something.
This terminology may never cease to enrage me.
short answer here is that free RAM is wasted RAM, never pay attention to it and instead track page faults
long answer is the same but with me complaining about Solaris’s dumb VM model
I like having some ram free because my poor laptop that I dumpster dived only has 8 gigs and sometimes tabs in Firefox just decide to use 2 GB of ram because ??? and then the swap gets fucked and now computer is sad
yeah desktop linux is actually way worse at swap management than macos so unfortunately free ram isn’t zero sum in the case of running linux on a macbook
turn off swap or run with zramswap
if God wanted me to modify the swap after installing He would make it easily accessible for lazy idiots like me
I 100% should not be using linux is the takeaway
