a mainstream case manufacturer made a SFF ITX case that pretty much rips off the super boutique case designs in the market
too bad it’s 350 bucks because they don’t sell it without the PSU (a 650w gold-rated SFX unti, which is probably 100-130 bucks by itself) and AIO cooler, though NZXT has indicated they would release it separately if there was sufficent interest
@BustedAstromech@spacetown et al I’m forgetting (sorry) do y’all have insight as to how new boxes will effect the viability of current mid-range PC hardware ~10 TFlops? I am picturing utilization as a liquid that fills its container but that feels wrong.
Felix, do you have new nvidia news? I’m not seeing anything but last month’s wild speculation.
Regarding next-gen vs PC’s, I think the general target will be PC’s of the last four years – so 10TFlops fits easily within spec, though I’d feel weird about <8GB of video memory. If you’re willing to cut resolution to 1440p or 1080p you should be good with weaker cards for years.
There’ll be a lot of cross-gen games (it’s explicitly Microsoft’s strategy), with games jumping ship only to get off the CPUs and memory of last-gen, something that any PC should easily hurdle over.
You’ll probably want to move game installs off of hard disks and onto SSDs; Jedi: Fallen Order already showed really nasty hitching because it couldn’t stream data off the console hard drives fast enough.
high end 2016 (basically from pascal on) should be fully comparable to the new console generation in GPU terms (albeit console games have much more aggressive framebuffer LOD because pixel sharpness is less important so you might want some breathing room on a PC)
in CPU terms it’s harder to say because if they have a ryzen 2700 equivalent in there it’s not clear if they have all cores available to games at all times, but I’m hoping I can run my 3570k and titan xp pair through 3/5nm availability at least
I have a hard time believing Japanese ports could continue to chug the way they’ve done in the past as that’s almost always due to threading / renderer sloppiness and that just can’t happen anymore when all your engines are super parallel and you can run the same directx code on PC as xbox
but that said I don’t have a good sense of when high end games will start flat out requiring eight threads or something comparable
I strongly suspect an upgrade over a well maintained overclocked 2500k+ won’t be necessary until Intel gets their act together, but I wouldn’t buy anything other than a 2700/3600/3700 until then
