Tom's Hardware of Finland

well I am armed with torx screwdrivers and already disconnected the battery and tried booting just on the ac power, and it still didn’t work. that laptop was already a backup machine that was my dad’s before he died, sooo I think I’m just going to take the opportunity to finally get a new(ish) model

the Pros are actually good now, especially if you can get a 2018 or 2019 refurb. The rest of the lineup is not.

my 1password sub renews this week so uh

are they still totally unrivalled or have any of the post-snowden alternatives caught up

fwiw theyre still the best one ive found

Bitwarden is the new FOSS competitor that’s reasonably polished. Haven’t bothered to switch because I’m admining a 1Password group for my immediate family.

I’m running Bitwarden. More or less painless migration and identical UX, minor graphic design shortcomings aside. Currently I’m using their free cloud plan but plan to move to a self-hosted Docker instance eventually.

perhaps you could sell me on why I should get, say, an officially refurbed 2019 pro (probably 13") over, say, a used 2013-15 pro 15" for like a third of the price. the lack of ports on the new ones disturb me and I worry about the keyboard situation

if you’re looking at 15" the 2013-15 models are still viable (quad core) and if you can get a good deal on one secondhand, by all means

if you want 13", 2018 onward is when they’ve had quad core and less unreliable keyboards (and also coincides with the USB-C ecosystem becoming bearable), it’s more that I wouldn’t buy 2016-17 under any circumstances and the old ones are starting to be clunky

thanks.

are there any tips you have to making the usb-c habitat as bearable as possible? I’ll obvs need a adapter/dock of some sort…

read reviews on the stuff you buy, there’s finally enough cheap and cross compatible dongles out there that it doesn’t feel like a lot to swallow but way too many of them only implement a subset of what is now a moronically complicated spec

is ‘airpods pro lite’ a real product name

cook sure is a less endearing ballmer huh

the 2019 windows 10 builds were the only ones that were ever kind of bad for me and now that I’ve advanced to the 20.04 version I’m finding it a lot more solid again so that’s good

I doubt that will be the final name, “Lite” is not in the Apple Newspeak dictionary

If they keep to their usual vocabulary list, the only reasonable option that comes to mind is “AirPods S”

someone point me to a cheap phone that isn’t terrible

when I say “cheap”, I mean like, the most I’m willing to go is maybe 110-120 bucks

can I interest you in a new flagship phone from three years ago for an operating system that is end-of-life

it might be exactly the kind of perversity you’re into

if I’m being honest, I mostly do phone calls and youtube nonsense on my phone

I have hilariously low requirements

most of this is spurned by the headphone jack is missing a bit of metal from the casing and now I have to actively hold the plug in to get noise out of phone and also phone is old and needs to be put down

my phone screen has been shattered frequently and severely enough to have a dime-sized chunk missing from the top right corner leaving sharp glass edges exposed sometimes a little module there pops out a little bit and you gotta give it a shove and the frame is dented enough to make it think that headphones are constantly plugged in so the speaker only produces sound if you manually engage speakerphone mode and for nothing else but is required to speak to another human because it also thinks a mic is plugged into those phantom headphones so now i am one of those insane trash people who holds up their speakerphone to their face in public yelling IM AT THE STORE into it every time you tap the screen a liquid ripple distorts the image i had switched over to a slightly less shattered older model and considered redeploying my old beloved 4 with a sweet custom hardwood back but i checked it in the ‘old phone’ drawer and the battery has swelled up like a beached whale also really what is the point

I’ve got a spare SE, hmu if you want

@notbov assuming Android, I recommend the Nokia 6.1 or 6.2. I bought one for a research project and the build is very impressive. Critically IMO it’ll also get updates for two years at least. @azurelore might have more practical impressions.

This thing is effectively a rock. I seem to be weirdly butterfingered lately; I don’t recall ever having dropped a major piece of electronics before, but I seem to keep sending this phone clattering to the floor, freaking out every time, and though I do not recommend this as a leisure activity there isn’t even a scuff on the thing. It also has a bunch of storage, that I have been cramming with music and TV episodes on top of not worrying much about swapping out apps. It’s reasonably big without being this awkward mini-tablet like some other phones. Like, it still fits in a pocket. It’s thin. Almost feels mechanical. It just… works, without any nonsense or pretense. It is a good tool.

I got this this morning. Nice job Samsung. At least it didn’t say “missile incoming from North Korea”
