griping about musicians

i think elvis costello fucking sucks. idk what it is, i just fucking hate this guy’s music.

i’m going to try and listen to a bit more of ‘the who’ - always felt they were a bit shit too. i like baba o’riley and some hits, sure. i found tommy fucking unlistenable dogshit, tho…

my dad is obsessed with elvis costello. he had a misogynist interpretation for basically every song, and i don’t think he was far off despite being a total dumbass.

i also hate elvis costello lmao

the best thing he did was produce the pogues

James booker is a treasure, one of the best to ever do it

i posted this in your song of the moment 3 but i probably should have elaborated. this is probably the best version of the long and winding road i’ve ever heard. the original album version is absurdly overdone by phil spector, the let it be naked version has horrific, unbelievably awful autotune, the glyn johns 1969 mix on let it be super deluxe has paul’s vocal drenched in far too much reverb

first time i’ve actually gotten to hear a legitimately solid version of this song and it’s made me appreciate the tune a lot more. spector really and truly butchered this one

man idk Chelsea is great. like, the weird squeaks his guitar does

i’m about to get stupid high and give elvis costello a real gentleman’s chance

my comment derives from hearing this song:

and finding it literally unlistenable. i had to turn it off. i was mostly listening because someone mentioned it contains a jab at john lennon and roger waters, but i don’t think i actually made it that far. shit sucks

i’ve listened to my aim is true in like 2006 in a college dorm room. never in my life was i like, yeah elvis costello, i should listen to more of that dude. life is too short

BUT i’m giving him a chance. soon as i get taterbaked

tbc that’s the only song of his i care about or really know

well there’s another one that a friend is named after but i can’t remember what it sounds like so

The Who is absolutely the worst of the canonical classic rock bands, due to the fact that they are huge fucking nerds.

And John Bonham > Keith Moon

The Who absolutely are dog shit outside of like their first couple of albums. Everything bad about dad rock in one neat package. Daltrey is obnoxious!!!

ok i sampled a lot. i still fucking hate this dude. last year’s model is slightly more palatable than my aim is true. pump it up is a banger at least

edit: fuck it’s called this year’s model… very confusing elvis!

listening to the who. we’re still early. my generation (us version) is ok, but some of the r&b shit is unconvincing. you’re mostly here for my generation, the kids are alright, and the ox - those ones are fucking great. the rest is loud! powerful! but musically generally not particularly interesting. the bo diddley cover on the uk version is unbelievably bad. sometimes pete flicks the pickup switch on his guitar rapidly lol. keith is good. nicky hopkins rules, especially on the ox. entwistle and moon is a good rhythm section. daltrey is already hard to listen to most of the time. the songwriting is pretty uneven.

Thank god my snoozed email just reminded me about those 4k scan Barry Lyndon tickets for tomorrow because otherwise the tragic rock and roll takes displayed in this thread would have ruined americas birthday for me.

are you an elvis costello fan or a fan of the rock opera tommy, or both? trying to narrow it down

pre-tommy great, tommy movie good?, live at leeds great, entwistle god

you put out records that have workin week, red shoes, less than zero, alison, watching the detectives, no action, this year’s girl, lip service, out in the street, i don’t mind, good’s gone, my generation, kids are alright, legal matter, you do in fact get a free pass for life, imo

well i’m glad i’ve covered most of that

of the costello’s, alison is fantastic, 10/10. i also love pump it up and chelsea is pretty good. sod the rest imo.

the guitar work is excellent on my aim is true. he’s consistently pretty lyrically clever. it’s the rest of the songwriting and often the vocal delivery i find underwhelming. not a fan

the who are a really good rhythm section in 1965, but the songwriting is just not all there. out in the street is way too warmed-over white-boy blues for me. i can’t take that voice seriously even with entwistle and moon going off. the lyrics are often regrettable as well, and something about those backing harmonies i think really undercuts the heaviness of the rhythm section. it is certainly cool and heavy for '65 but idk. most of it ain’t hitting. the three tunes i mentioned earlier are unimpeachable tho. if the songwriting (or just sheer badassery, in the case of the ox) was more consistently at that level, i’d be more onboard, because the instrumentals do in fact often smoke

ultimately i agree tho, my generation alone is so fucking good it can be used to justify the entire endeavor. and daltrey is singularly perfect on that tune.

same with elvis. pump it up, my favorite, is really a perfect song imo

edit: more notes on my generation: the good’s gone is very good. i underrated it on first listen. it’s actually almost perfect i think, and close enough to include with the other 3 i mentioned before, but i’m not too fond of the lyrics. it’s pretty great though. the townshend solo is great

armed forces is one of the earliest lps i can remember hearing on repeat, still very keen on it
