The Worst Highest-Rated Games on Metacritic

Oh yeah, I mean I felt this way when it released. With early news on 2, I had this really dense take like the original was enough and complete in itself, so expanding on that directly couldn’t be worthwhile, a cheap grab, etc. Was glad to munch crow.

Details like how effective Sophia Lamb and others were character-writing wise is kinda faded to me now, but controlling your own romp both literally and figuratively (with more agency through Other Underbellies of Rapture), weaponry and plasmid use improved, probably level design, def the emotional undercurrent. Seemed generally sharper across the board, I might just get tired of a 4th time through 1 and skip to it.

love love Minerva’s Den.

Also DMC3 was greatly improved by Special Edition.

I am actually playing the first Devil may Cry on pc these days, and i really managed to understrand better how the fighiting works better then 5, and i like how it just looks like a really modded Resident Evil Code Veronica game.

It was wrong to hide ashlanderwoman’s post and call them shitty for getting upset. “What do you expect when you shitpost”, well probably not dark souls debate club, more like what did SLIME expect when they clicked on the “popular games you don’t like” thread. It IS aggro to insistently request people justify and defend their noncommittal opinions while you suggest fixes and alternatives, when they didn’t even ask you to and are giving you increasingly forbidding replies. Not picking on you, slime, you already apologized, you’re fine.

What’s with the games with huge disparaties in critic and user scores? They got the right idea with LBP. I would think official gamer reviews are pretty much an accurate sampling of the average gamer review, which might be less true for other mediums.

I know Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 is definitely a case of the critic reviews being old/biased - the Dreamcast version’s critic reviews are full of Sega and Dreamcast fansites and I think one of the reviews is from fucking GameSpot when the game came out, they gave it like a 95 because it has a high Fun Factor or whatever. The user score is probably because everyone knows the third Tony Hawk is the best one anyway.

people are more inclined to user review if they have a bone to pick, which usually means they’re giving the game a 0

I feel like I’m messing up by posting anything serious in this thread but complaining about frame rates in N64 games is anachronistic. Games would commonly chug in the prior generations at really busy moments, and we were all pretty accustomed to it. In fact it sometimes added dramatic effect!

Upon research I think it actually has to do with a mysterious “test of time”. Where can we see the results of this test? Is it annual?

yeah but in 2020 people find it hard to play an FPS at sub 20fps, and I think that plays into the relatively common opinion that goldeneye itself is an anachronistic curio rather than something of more firm merit

There are definitely things to admire about DMC and a number of its flaws can be accepted in hindsight as a new type of action game taking form, and it was certainly smart enough to steer away from the pre-rendered backdrops of Onimusha (which didn’t work for me at the time nor does it still).

I also imagine its history as being a prototypical Resident Evil sequel carried over into these development decisions as some of the camera work was quite neat in places and for better or worse can be seen expressed in Code Veronica, although essentially the moments of Blind Corner Peekaboo Fuckery really doesn’t complement the experience outside the context of Survival Horror.

One of the things it did get right (despite being game-breakingly stupid) is the joy of mashing GUNS and the charging of fist combos. Love that shit.

It controlled really, really well for 2001. As a 3D third-person action game, everything that came before controlled like Ocarina. The camera angles have their issues but as it turns out letting players not worry about controlling the camera does a lot for the flow of combat.

Agreed! I was probably more of a Ninja Gaiden junkie around this time and that game was extremely hectic with its camera repositioning.

Hey, do I start with Sigma or Black?

Black is always in fashion. Also runs better and misses very little in content differences.

A part of me would insist on going straight to 2 but give it a shot…and now I realise this has finally been made backwards-compatible with the XBone. There goes my Saturday…
