The PS5 is actually good

as Intel is currently finding out, an old adage (not really) of tech is

you only need one flop to make history

which remains significant today.

I loved the shit out of my mini disc walkman. Used it until the spring loaded deck exploded the whole thing apart

All of those things on that list rule

Digital Foundry did one for Series X before it came out.

Don’t know about the Switch but they’ve probably covered it.

Would be cool if Microsoft/Nintendo had a Cerny-like figure though, yeah.

that’s what i discovered when putting that list together!
to think that all of them were no success-story:

guess we see History in the Making with the PS5 Pro right now?

Is sales just the metric that the PS5 Pro is a failure? It seems to me that the people who own one love it.

If I paid 800 dollars for a console I’d tell you I loved it too.

It depends on how many they were expecting to sell. They knew it was going to be a smaller, very specific audience they were selling to anyway regardless of the price point.

You’ll know it was a failure to them if they start marking the price down. If it stays full price then it’s meeting their expectations.

I paid $1200 for an iPhone 15 Pro last year and I really wish I didn’t!

But I understand where you’re coming from. Some people buy things for a lot of money and that makes them love it. It’s kind of gross, but everyone involved is happy, so it kinda seems weird to be upset from the outside. Edit: be upset if you want! I guess idk. It’s like whatever.

if scalpers have to sell them for Less-Than-MSRP, guess they are not going well.

Would love to see a statistic how many disc drives have been allocated and how many of them are in the hands of scalpers, since i know at leasttwo people(w/o a PS5) that would love to upgrade from their PS4 (non Pro) to a 5 Pro.

Honestly the best argument against the PS5 Pro is that it would look ugly here

does the pro really look worse than the normal ps5?

I think it looks ugly horizontally. And I think vertical consoles are ugly. So yes.

Horizontal PS5s as pictured above remind me of the 2008 Pepsi design doc

can we talk about how intense the ps5 controller’s haptic feedback is? this is part of the quality that makes every game i’ve played on it feel kind of like an amusement park ride. i still can’t decide if that’s good or not. but it’s definitely weird!

The haptics on the controller are the most intriguing thing about PS5 to me. I’ve not held one and tried it yet so I’m worried I might be building it up too much in my mind and when I finally do it will be underwhelming.

I’ve actually started turning controller vibration off in general because it just drains the batteries more and often doesn’t add that much to a game. I can remember when it was new and interesting for that reason alone but after 25 years I think I’m over it.

Unless PS5 can bring me back.

Anyway there’s more Cerny content I didn’t know about.

I’m here to tell you that the haptics on the PS5 controller are nothing special. Most games don’t do much with it. The ones that do use it sometimes hit you with a gimmick that makes you say “ooh la la” and then forget about it forever in 12 seconds. The triggers are slightly cooler conceptually than the HD rumble but in practice you usually just wish you could use the triggers normally.

The game that used it most memorably is Returnal, but again, nothing mind blowing.

Despite being at least 50% marketing, the Dual Sense is still the world’s best console controller.

the triggers make weird loading noises and I don’t understand why there’s just a giant plastic button in the whole middle of the controller
