The Playstation Four is 10 Years Old

Having now replayed PT and having the PS5 taking all the space under my TV and doing all the PS4 things that are not PT it’s time to retire the beast.

I sure did enjoy that console so much I’ve owned two of them. And now technically, a 3rd one. You could play a lot of games on it. It’s a great device for playing game until just like the ps3 they bogged down the UI until it was painfully slow.

I upgraded the harddrive on it twice, as game sizes exploded. Nice I could do that. I sure do like the controller a lot more than the PS5 controller.

Now everyone can talk about Bloodborne.

I kept waiting for it to feel established and for as many exclusives as it got, they also all got ported and most of them fell flat for me.

Even Ignoring how two of them got PC ports, FFXV, Death Stranding, and Bloodborne aren’t enough to feel like a library to me. And those are the only ‘exclusive’ games on the console that actually stuck with me.

Still not sure if it was the console or me that made it feel this way in the end. Probably a little of both.

Still got mine. It stacks nicely with others. Might be the last console I ever get? Keeping it out of the closet for Hamster’s Arcade Archives series at this point.

I picked up a PS3 at the end of last gen (edit: oops I meant last LAST gen) to finally play through all its exclusives and had a great time. I did the same thing with the PS4 earlier this year and played Bloodborne and Sakura Wars on it… and that was it! And Sakura Wars sucked! Most of the games being ported to PC was part of it, but I think also my tastes changed, because I don’t really want to play those ported games anyway. Oh well!

the best bit about the PS4 is that i hoarded a lot of games that the loud harrier wouldn’t let me enjoy in dignified silence, so it made me

a) open it up and remove & re-apply noctua CPU heatsink goob
b) ponder a fan update that never happened
c) give the PS5 the best launch lineup any console ever had when i got it.

The PS4 will have a special place in my heart for it is the console where

  • controller :battery: were always flat
  • you started to realize that MS understood what Sony Didn’t (Hardware has its price, ignore that and the opposition gets an easy sell + a sizeable portion of your future library sells are lost for good)
  • i cannot remember what game i cleared first on it
  • i appreciate the lack of design shenanigans applied to it, because you could stack it easily w/ the XB3 for taking it with you on two week trips at your parents’ place

Last but not least, behold the epic list of 'surely i will pick up, play and finish these soon, now that i have a silent PS5!' titles, a.k.a PS4 leftovers:

Sekiro
Deus Ex: Megadrive
Fahrenheit
Bloodborne
Life is Strange
Seb Loeb Rally EVO (VIII i want to j/k, but let’s be serious)
Redout
Mechwarrior 5
Left Alive ( :curly: )
Rot3K XIII
Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada
Pocky&Rocky Reshrined
Sakura Wars (:+1: that someone was tricked as well into buying that)
Dissidia FF NT (Brawl me up Like Bouncers Do!)
State of Mind
… and some online PSN store thingies, but that’s for another list of shame (part quatré)

ps4 and switch were the first consoles i bought with my own money after moving out of home (second hand natch) and it was my first playstation as well. it was cool being up to date with console generations for a few years there but i mostly used it to play ffxiv. keep meaning to get back into it

I’ve mentioned this before, but I bought both my PS3 and my PS4 for The Last Guardian.

Bloodborne did end up being the best PS4 game, but 13 Sentinels, Death Stranding, Astro Bot, and Dreams were also very good.

I realized reading this thread that I had completely forgotten what the PS4 looked like, and I had to image search it and be “ooooooh yeeeeeeeeeeah it was the funky rhombus-lookin’ motherfucker.”

I love that this machine still allows me to play inferior versions of current gen games. Should I get The Crew Motorfest and see how it runs?

These are all the PS4 games I got left to play, Need for Speed and Driveclub I already finished, don’t know why I’m holding onto those. Need for Speed is so good though.

Oh and I’m playing this rn:

Maybe the last Playstation 4 game I’ll play will be Infinite Wealth or an English EDF6 release let’s see.

it’s cool that the ps4 was the last console ever it had some good games and continues to get them

The last new console I got, which I got specifically for 2 games: The Last Guardian and whatever version of Gran Turismo would come with it. I got a launch day copy of No Mans Sky and was probably the only person on earth who thought it was perfect out of the box. Driveclub looked, and still looks, incredible. There’s still a huge layer of dust on mine and I keep neglecting to pick up Gran Turismo again. The PS5 has an updated version now, and a gran turismo, but I just don’t feel like there’s anything worth playing on it.

Overall I was pretty happy with this rig and still am. I still have a sizeable backlog on it. All the talk of PT makes me want to start a thread for devices we’re holding on to because a particular game or two is marooned on there. Thinking also of like, Ziggurat on old iPod Touch devices

I think it’s a later model and they are quieter and use almost as little power as the Slim models. Also goes well with my Xbone S imo.
