yeah i had to google it and found it like, 2 layers deep into documentation
I can’t un-blood-potion a post after I dunno maybe five minutes or something. Is that new? I didn’t remember that. Seems odd, would prefer to be able to change my mind at any point. Now I’m gonna have to think twice before blood potioning anything. Darn thinking.
I don’t know when that “feature” was implemented, but by my recollection it’s been like this for years.
I tested it and it seems to unbloodpotion fine. What theme do you use?
am on standard theme, and I can’t unbloodpotion anything on selectbutton 2 (mobile + desktop), unless it’s a handful of minutes old
I suspect it’s a user permissions thing.
Blood cannot be unspilled
It’s not working now for me btw, so it should be unrelated to themes
I’m not 100% sure where this is at so I’ll just answer anyway : ), my theme is set to “mauve’s Blue,” and I still can’t unpotion posts I potioned more than ~a handful of minutes ago.
I could have sworn I used to be able to unpotion posts regardless of time elapsed, but heck I can’t be sure.
it’s always been that you can’t unblood after a bit
what’s a situation where you’d want to unblood potion something other than an accidental click, just curious
Thanks for clearing that up. ^ _^
Oh just if I go off and think more about a post and realize that I didn’t actually agree with something in it.
WE ARE WORKING ON SOME SITE ERRORS THAT HAVE TO DO WITH THEMES SO YOUR FAVORITE FORUM SKIN MIGHT HAVE TO BE DISABLED OR DELETED AND RE DONE THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE
since i have encountered this in various flavors (sometimes it hangs at 20ish %, sometimes at 80ish) for a while and have trialed different steps to reach a deterministic workaround, here’s my how-to for the daring few that use firefox mobile:
- Browser: Firefox 119.0.1 (and older)
- OS: At least Android 12 and 13
- Problem description:
When entering the URL or clicking on a bookmark of SB, site starts to load, then stalls and doesn’t finish loading the forum front-page. What can be seen is an empty page, sometimes with loading-bar animation stuck at 20ish%, sometimes 80ish%. If i close the tab, open it up again the same way (either typing or clicking bookmark), same thing happens (again w/ high probability, would estimate about 90% of the time it is stuck on loading). If i use deliberately another method of entering site (e.g. click bookmark first, close tab, then enter URL), no discernible difference of behaviour. If i let SB tab open, close browser, open it up again and it starts directly loading the SB site again, same result, stuck on loading.
- Frequency: about 1/3 of all attempts, if not more, fail.
- Workaround:
(1) Open up browser, click SB bookmark or enter URL. If website loads, great, GOTO (6);
(2) If website doesn’t load: Leave the SB tab (which is stuck on loading screen) open.
(3) Open another tab with any bookmark/site you usually visit. That’s the IMPORTANT step here!
(4) Stay on that tab (opened in step (3)) and close the browser (on Android/this launcher: press square key once, swipe upwards to close app. ymmv on android flavor) important aspect for this to work is that by opening up the browser again, you force a reload of the different website opened in step (3).
(5) Only now switch back to the SB tab — it should now start loading the site again, and in about 95-100% of the cases, finish loading in two or three seconds.
(6) Shitpo — j/k, do qualityposting or bloodpotion the hell out of these forums. FIN
tl;dr explanation of what i assume is going on:
when loading the forums, for whatever reason the browser engine gets stuck on some detail that is probably/likely hard, if not impossible, to diagnose w/o a concerted effort.
Cheapo workaround described therefore uses an intrinsic behaviour of ffox mobile browser that adjacent (“not shown”) tabs are auto-reloaded when opening up the browser again, and for whatever reason, that almost always seems to fix the problem(s) encountered, be it due to some HTTP-SYN/ACK-requests problems, leaky files, browser engine bugs, forum rendering scripts, emojis or whatever — important thing is it works often enough for the issue to be downgraded to minor hassle on FF mobile, so no browser switch needed, no debugging or re-installing things, just a limited step of actions to perform.
Not sure how other browsers handle this (adjacent tabs in the background being open, after browser has been killed/closed and started anew, navigating to adjacent tab), but guesstimation is since most have converged to the chromium engine under the hood, it’ll be a quasi-default behaviour you’d have to actively deactivate in shady settings-files cfg-options that 95% of users aren’t aware that these even exist.
hope this helps everyone that encounters this problem, and hope i managed to write it up in a manner that it can be understood by someone that isn't a tech-nerd/programmer. if something's unclear, let me know, I can elaborate further --verbose if needed.
can someone restore the Ten Year Old Youtube Video thread? or maybe i just can’t find it
it has been restored
This probably isn’t a broken thing I mean I don’t know how Discourse works or anything but I keep running into the thing where I search for a thread, click the thread title in search results to go there, and it dumps me at the start of the thread, instead of my last reading position in the thread or the new post after my old position or whatever.
It would be swell if clicking a link from search results could start me at my reading position, like clicking on a thread link usually does. = ) I dunno if I ever really have a need for it to dump me back at the start of a thread I’ve already been reading before.
if you wanna go to a specific post in a thread you gotta make sure the url points there
for example here is me linking a post in a thread
https://selectbutton.net/t/robot-you-have-20-seconds-to-comply-ai/13557/207
the last number in the url says the post number, the second to last number is the thread number. like you said this isn’t really a broken thing it’s just how the urls work in discourse. so when you’re searching for threads and it’s giving you results it’s only linking you to the thread and not a specific post. you can ‘fix’ it by remembering where you left off and adding that to the URL or by clicking the thread in your watched threads list or searching for the post you left off at. hope this helps!
also, when you go to the beginning of a thread you’ve already started reading, a ‘back’ button should appear in the lower right that will take you to your first unread post
Oh! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a “back” button.
For instance if I search up the “dope box art” thread
when I click the thread title link it puts me at the top of the thread–but I don’t see a “back” button, just that number of posts widget thingy in the lower right
If I click that widget, this pops up–still no “back” button
There’s that “9h ago” link at the bottom of the vertical slider–I think that just goes to the latest post, though? [Wait lemme check this … Okay yeah that goes to the latest post, not first unread.]
If I click the “jump to” button in there, still no “go to first unread” function
i dunno what the back button is either, i went looking excitedly too! but like i said when you search for a thread it takes you to the top post because of how the urls work (when you use the search function you need to specify what post you want to go to if you want the search results to link that post). the way to see a thread’s unread posts is to click it from the latest topic list or the unread list or your watched threads list.
