except the fact of the matter is they do moderate, with the power of Algorithms
the algorithms are why people have started associating Steam with a giant pile of crap, because it, like all other web 3.0 machine learning websites, prioritizes engagement over everything else. Which means meme power rules the day.
at some level, youâre abdicating what you see on any store to other people; whether it be friends, or gatekeepers, or ratings services, or whatever. itâs just a matter of who and whether you trust them.
a lot of people trust steamâs own algorithms, even if that isnât the dominant method here, and it has been nothing but headaches for all involved.
that is true and worth being critical of but I donât think itâs quite equivalent to being allowed on the platform.
I think they only have 2 choices: heavily moderate the platform, creating store that truly represents a curated list, or get entirely out of the way. The halfway house theyâve been in for the past few years canât exist without creating situations like weâve seen in the past month with Christine Loveâs games being swept up with cleaning out some of the grosser visual novels. Now that itâs big enough every single attempt at moderation creates a million, âwhat about game zâ? questions that they honestly had no answer to.
The algorithmic tools for showing me good stuff are both awful and much better than Appleâs, Googleâs, Microsoftâs, or Sonyâs. That doesnât absolve them from responsibility for effectively promoting interesting and good work, but Steam continues to produce more interesting hit games from small developers than other platforms.
forcing every single game to have a public web forum is honestly a higher tier of bad thing for steam thanâŠa lot of things
this to me is like saying amazon âproducesâ more interesting small press books than any other platform
i guess iâm saying that just because a huge number of people have to sell on a monopolized ecosystem to survive doesnât make it a breeding ground for creativity
i have Opinions on all of this but i am honestly all Hot Taked Out and weary of people jumping on every other thing i say over the past few days so Iâm just going to focus on development for a little while
but like
while i think them allowing everything they can is good, i am generally not willing to accept The Algorithm as a solution to much of anything. there are always gatekeepers. just because your product is sold on a marketplace doesnât mean you can sell any of it.
just look at the mobile market.
lefty types know how it is, âfree speech for allâ is, in reality, âsome people sure talk a lot but nobody ever hears about the others For Some Reason and itâs not because theyâre not speaking.â
Yeah, in the word âproducesâ I donât mean to imply that Steam is creating the success, but to note that the structure of the store is better at elevating these things than other saturated digital app stores.
Iâve seen the chummy relationship certain Indies can get with Valve and the more equal footing big publishers gets and Iâve seen how it effects those outside those walls; Valve is mindful of how it uses its power to not create those walls and prefers to wash its hands.
As someone who looks through the new releases on Steam every day as I find their algorithms to be next to worthless, the truth is that I find all algorithms to be useless and I think discoverability is an unsolvable problem when dealing with this volume of new content daily. It is always gonna be determined by tastemakers, connections or random luck, expecting something else at this point feels naive.
I feel like I could be all over this now
fuck The Algorithm
Unrelated to anything: Somebody somewhere on this forum posted a dope animated Tron Bonne or Servbot emote thing a week ago and I cannot find it anywhere

?
this sounds so good
You can easily use it by clicking the smiley button as youâre writing a reply and then clicking the bottom icon (the animated one on a winnerâs pedestal) in the little side bar to browse the custom forum emoticons.
Somebody owes Simon StÄlenhag some royalty checks
Like this is straight up just Tales from the Loop but the art isnât as cool.
no omega team tho, i. e. it will be technically good and missing goofy dorkiness, which⊠is what rottk is all about, at least for me!
Woah, this new Rollcage looks pretty good.
