I can now confirm that this is absolutely incredible.

wait is dragon quest xi out in japan or something

I guess I never paid any attention

I was a lot more interested in the 3DS version

Both versions came out in Japan a year ago, or just abouts. I was relieved to see the release date because I was starting to think they were going to find some reason to not bring it over.

edit-I just looked up what’s going on with the 3DS version and the news is some real bullshit.

I mean, I know it’s pretty niche outside of Japan and translating/localizing the games costs money but… maaaaan.

But I guess you could still play the Japanese version and just learn to read Japanese?

See this is the game that would probably give me VR sickness, whereas I’ve been fine with others

This is literally the game I told myself would sell me on trying VR. Wasn’t expecting it to be available so soon

I am not ready

It’s actually not bad at all. The game gives you several options to adjust your view and prevent the onset of motion sickness. There’s an option to limit your peripheral view (visors appear on your side windows once the race starts) and there are three camera modes that adjust how the camera works (follow the track, follow the ship, follow the pilot). Turning on “Follow the Pilot” is the only option that pops up a warning about motion sickness, as it will feature a lot more bobbing inside your cockpit. But the other options were very stable. You can also choose to play within your cockpit or Close or Far third person views.

But oh man, it is so much better than I could have imagined. The cockpit is fully modeled. You can see yourself holding the steering wheel and thruster. You can see the faint opacity of your windshield, you can look behind you to see your seat and the back of your ship. You can see your engines on either side and watch as your air brakes rise and fall as you turn corners. You can watch all the people cheering in the audience, and the civilian vehicles flying above and below your track. You caneven see the heat distortion from your opponent’s boosters if you’re tailing someone.

The sense of place is astonishing, as you’d expect from VR, but it looks especially great with WipEout’s clean art style. On PS4 Pro it’s astonishingly smooth as well; PSVR’s resolution and power tend to cause lots of aliasing but the sleek curves of WipEout VR look very smooth and natural. It’s all around probably the best VR experience I’ve had yet.

And it’s the full game! All of WipEout Omega Collection is fully playable with no limitations in VR! I couldn’t stop grinning and chuckling as I tried every track (this was actually my first time playing Omega Collection so I don’t have anything unlocked but the default tracks). Try checking out some YouTube videos of it. It’s super cool.

https://www.dogarandkazon.com/blog/2018/3/18/strange-settlement-on-an-alien-planet Brad Wardell is so gross, I feel like this should be a headline on Gaming News sites but it sadly isn’t.

Smooth continuous motion, especially with a frame like a cockpit tends to work out great in VR regardless of the speed. It’s when things get jerky and herky that your guts protest. Cuba’s Chex Quest burps are from quick turns and fast speed combined.

uggggggggh goddammit

it’s just so frustrating in hindsight that this entire cohort of relatively inspirational artists were all so awful

obviously I’m glad it’s coming out but it sucks for so many people (some much more than others)

Yeah I mean I can get being upset that certain artists ended up being shitheads in hindsight but John K has always been a piece of shit and all anyone needed to do to realize this was to read his homophobic, angry, misogynist blog for more than one minute.

The old promotional spumco video of 40 year old him and 18 year old katie rice are just unbelievably creepy. I remember being a huge fan of his and then completely hating him after seeing those videos and reading hisblog – even as a myopic teenager I knew he was disgusting, resentful man.

i like to imagine the complete cratering of his career was partially due to this, but it’s doubtful. It’s also important to remember that he has zero legacy beyond 10 episodes of ren and stimpy. He was an interesting animator, but emphasis on was – those 10 episodes from 25 years ago are the only good work he’s done, all of his work since then is just horrendous. He’s vastly over-credited by cartoonists and animators.

I actually speculated out of my ass (here?) at one point whether this would be possible and I’m thrilled that someone implemented it

I feel like they’re kind of stretching it with their claims – none of the big names you think of (Okada, Kaneko, Tadashi, et cetera) are really involved in this. Though, I love to see Tsukasa Masuko doing more work.

But, yeah, I wouldn’t back this at the stage they’re presenting it to us.
