i think it is easier to create spectacle through scale than through detail

lol, people painstakingly overinterpret and analyze the endings of Catherine to show that it is underpinned by transphobia, but when it comes to Yakuza, extremely egregious offence is removed (that is so obvious in its crassness) and it is praised to high heavens, notwithstanding that the whole series is plagued with the same underlying disposition that allowed something like that Yak3 thing to exist to begin with.

mind you, I am not downplaying the actual efforts to remove the grosser elements. just commenting on the discourse, particularly in the light of Catherine.

Frankly there are some pretty egregious things in Catherine’s original version already?

It makes sense to praise a company for having any foreword motion on removing transphobic content from the products if you want to encourage improvement.

This is an extremely labored double standard here? Even if somehow the new things in Catherine aren’t ‘as bad’ as reported, it’s still shitty. And to my knowledge, they have not improved the existing transphobic elements from the original.

a company choosing to remove content that belittles and further marginalizes a group, and can (and has) lead to real-world harm is something to be praised, yes.

the original catherine was transphobic horseshit eight years ago, too. so unless that magical neogaf post every dipshit on twitter likes to post as some anti-sjw “gotcha” suddenly gained the ability to travel through time and retroactively acquit nearly twenty years of atlus’ queerphobic output, i sincerely doubt anything has changed.

sega did an objectively good thing here, showing maturity and growth in an industry that is overwhelmingly immature, whereas atlus can kiss my trans ass.

There’s also a rumor that Xbox game pass is coming to switch (?)

For some reason even contemplating a new console generation just fills me with ennui

I built a PC in 2013 thinking it would help forestall the horror of being alive but there are not enough humble bundles in the world.

Good on Microsoft for refusing to link the fires though, end that cycle y’all, 360 emulators on windows, MCC on PC, burn it down :fire::fire::fire:

Some of the music and artwork in Axiom Verge is so crunchy and creepy. Its style is actually quite unique, not really the literal-minded Metroid reimagination it’s often stereotyped as.

I agree, a lot of stuff is just amazing. The music in that place with the crawling laser bots actually made me go “whoa!” out loud. The whole aesthetic of the thing is very well-realized, and it’s just so cool. I also really like how the story unfolds the way it does, and how it ties into the mechanics.

My biggest gripe though is that all the areas are just way, way too huge, and not memorable enough, and getting from one place to the next is just a pain in the ass. The reason Super Metroid is often held up as the best example of getting these things right is that when you get a new thing and you think “oh I can use this back in that place!”, you not only know exactly where that was and how to get there, but getting there is quick and feels good because each area is distinct and doesn’t last too long.

Getting around in Axiom Verge is such an ordeal, on the other hand, that when you get a new upgrade, you might still think “oh I can use this for that thing I saw”, but it’ll often be followed by “…wherever that was” and/or “…well, if I ever find myself back there… SOMEday…”

But man is nearly everything else about it way cooler than people give it credit for.

i never beat Axiom Verge, but it always felt reminscent of what an Irem metrovania might have felt like, to me.

Devotion (Taiwan top-selling indie horror) getting review bombed by CN players for hidden easter egg reads “Xi Jinping Winnie the Pooh Moron”

(this review bomb is particularly interesting to look at. also, the discussion boards have become a total warzone between china and taiwan.)

I hope these artists stay safe, especially those who weren’t involved in this easter egg.

review-bombing has to be the lamest, most limp-dick form of expressing outrage.

I also just realized they’re holding themself to only free games that are available on both Windows and Mac so far which means if they keep this up for a year or two they’re going to blow through a whole lot of midbudget indies

In 1994, Digital Illusions (DICE) canceled a AAA, 99% complete Sega Genesis game called Hardcore. For 23 years Hardcore has gone unreleased. It has become one of the most sought after unreleased video games. We’re thrilled to announce that Hardcore is being released for the first time ever on Mega Sg. The only known source code of the game was stored on a single, dead hard drive that was barely recovered.

Hardcore is a fast paced, euro-style run’n’gun, space base thriller. We’re dedicated to preserving this piece of video game history and Hardcore is included digitally on each Mega Sg system.

Mega Sg is a reference quality video game system with reference quality video and audio quality. Sega Genesis / Mega Drive is implemented 100% in FPGA, by Kevin ‘Kevtris’ Horton.

May require a firmware update to play Hardcore on Mega Sg

“Hardcore” is now known as “Ultracore” due to licensing reasons
