I started playing Donkey Kong 64 with my partner with the mod to be able to switch characters anywhere, but even with that it was still a miserable slog and I take back everything I said about the N64 it actually sucks

I haven’t touched an N64 game in years and will not be revising my opinion

Imagine making a phenomenal game in F Zero X just to get so fucking owned by the corpse of your arch nemesis when they release F Zero GX on the next console cycle

eh. F-Zero X is just as good and personally i think it’s better than GX

Pinnacle of the series imho

Wait please tell us why

I think X and GX are about comparable – I prefer GX’s presentation somewhat – but X doesn’t have anywhere near the reputation of GX for various reasons and it’s fun to go to bat for

I might be misremembering this but I think GX took out the sideswipe mechanics for taking out the CPU racers which feels like a real bummer. Beyond that maybe X just felt like it had a good sense of speed without being very twitchy. It’s a pretty good pick-up-and-play game.

Finally, the X Cup on X is a well I kept dipping into for a very long time, even if some of the generated tracks were pure bullshit.

GX changed the input for the side attack from a double-tap of the shoulder buttons to whichever one of those bean-buttons was towards the side.

My main issue with GX’s handling is that it feels really weird when your vehicle is sorta reeling or off-center after bumping things or going over weirdly shaped bits of track. I’m pretty sure X didn’t have quite the same thing there with its physics.

X has battle race GX has like one level in the story mode that’s half as fun. end of

My inexpert opinion (not a speed runner):

The vehicles in X are extremely touchy and fragile. The slightest mistap of the analog stick can mean the difference between a normal turn and swerving wildly into a wall. It’s like trying to steer an arrow in flight, also there are other arrows that are trying to kill you. It’s incredible and I’ve never played anything quite like it.

Also the fact that X has its tracks kinda floating in space lends to the “pure racing” feel. It’s purpose built for one thing: to deliver speed and danger.

GX is chunkier - the vehicles feel like the multi-ton monsters they are. The levels are chunkier too, and each has a strong sense of place. It’s weighty. But it’s also still very, very fast. I don’t think there are any other futuristic racing games that make me feel more physically present in their worlds.

Plus it’s just got ridiculous amounts of shit in it - 41 characters, each with their own cars and own theme songs, 25 tracks, a vehicle builder with myriad parts to unlock, etc. etc. It’s the complete package, and just so overstuffed.

I prefer the feel and ridiculousness of GX but I don’t think it supercedes X in any way.

every race is a battle race if you want it to be

GX containing the whole of AX inside is one of the all time great easter eggs.

I made this exact same post about two years ago.

my take is that GX is the superior audiovisual experience, and X is the superior racing game mechanically

however, in my estimation X is only somewhat marginally better as a racing game (i prefer the way its mechanics blossom at the extremes of speed and skill and expert exploitation), whereas GX is notably superior to X specifically in its more holistic, rarefied smorgasbord-ery of aesthetic verve and confidence.

nonetheless, X is perhaps the best racing video game ever made, so
