I actually had Battle of Kingdom; picked it up rather randomly along with four or five other GB carts at a game shop in Kyoto when I visited Japan with my family as a high schooler. Thought it looked neat and was decently executed and yeah, didn’t seem to require knowing Japanese. ^ _^
Although hm now that I re-read my old notes, I got the impression you’d need to master the specific timing of each creatures’ attacks to get really good at it, which I did not do.
