The Icoverse and Its Legacy (formerly The Real Last Guardian Topic)

Yeah, I thought this was real interesting, moving some more film editing techniques to get them out of sticky spots. Unfortunately they aren’t consistent enough in its use to make it feel like a distinct choice, though – they’re not often cutting and they don’t edit their cutscenes like that.

as someone coming from a film background it’s really cool to see editing styles come across rather than just ~cinematic storytelling~

it’s almost a really great answer to the (non) problem of the camera but yeah it just ends up falling a bit short

Wasn’t sure if I was incorrectly directing Trico or if I was just going the wrong way about reaching a ledge so I stopped last night after a very neat beam-crossing segment. I think this is a game best played in one/one-and-half hour blocks. The couple of moments where Trico rolled around in pools of water were great

No other game has given me such a pronounced sense of vertigo. This would be the scariest game ever if the boy didn’t stop himself at ledges. There’s a continual sense of defying and yet newly using architecture to your advantage

So, @diplo, did you finish this game yet and did it live up to your expectations?

… because i did finish it today, after what must be at least a year off, kinda resembling the development of this game.
Interestingly, yesterday i’ve just finished my first run of SotC 3.0 (on easy, since i never want to bother with that mode again, since it must be the 10-15ish time i’ve finished this game in the last decade) so my impressions of LG are quite naturally influenced by that remake also.

Still, trying to wrap my head around a few things i haven’t made up my mind about in LG, but one thing that i noticed (rediscovered?) in the last two hours of this game is that you can rip the head off of armored guards when trico did not manage to destroy them the first time.

I’ve noticed this in an arena-esque room where 20ish guards appear and both of you have to work together to defeat them all. It was at that point that i started to get the role you/the boy has in the game, since you are there to make trico ‘s life easier by not getting caught, plus ripping heads off guards so that he doesn’ t have to properly finish them off.
The same thing applies for the player using the evasive role (rectangular button) for hitting guards, stunning them for a moment, sometimes making them drop a shield or weapon, the main advantage being that trico can pick them off so much easier.
It is remarkable how effortless this reversal of the players’ role works, Instead of attacking and killing things like you do in SotC, you find myself caring about making life easier for trico, since he is protecting both of you.
As someone has mentioned itt before, quite the reversal to Ico, where you were focussed on protecting Yorda/preventing Yorda to do stupid things.

What’s more, instead of praising the AI for the n+1th time that’s pretty good, let me just say that the co-op esque feeling this brings to the table is quite good in comparison to Yorda in Ico, or Agro in SotC. At some points, i was just relying on Trico to figure out what he needs to do, and after a while, he did.
This never felt old when it happened for the nth time, and is maybe one of the strongest tricks it played with so much ease.

So much for now, let’s see whether there’ll be more things to praise when i have thought a bit about the rest.

At the risk of derailing the thread, several months back @diplo expressed to myself and other mods that a particular moderator ruling was not sufficiently stringent, so SB no longer felt safe, so I am skeptical whether you will receive a response.

…I still need to play The Last Guardian.

well don’t that suck

cmon diplo, toll 1) ain’t here and 2) doesn’t want to hurt anyone

probably my two favorite posters down the drain and I don’t even know why

Oh.
I didn’t notice that happening, thanks for the heads up. Other people that have played this are welcome to share their thoughts as well!

I just got this finally lol

Every 4 months I am reminded this game exists and resolve to get it

I have not gotten it

it’s good

Yeah, I’ll get it, I’ll get it

go ahead and do it now.
trico wants you to do so!

I played about 10 minutes of it earlier this year
If I can do it on the Playstation-on-PC streaming thing I probably will

Every 4 months I play this for an evening and resolve to finish it

I have not finished it

More than Dark Souls III, this exudes exhaustion; an aura of statements already stated and lessons already learned. It’s such a beautiful, perfect, unnecessary thing

I played for an hour and then watched a Let’s Play of the rest, skipping over some of the samey parts. It made the experience a bit less dry, solitary and eat-your-art-vegetables-like.

Yeah, I played the very beginning of it and felt like I was sitting in an art gallery looking at an austere and beautiful old painting that I respected but didn’t really care about. At some point I want to give it another go, but it really does feel like eating my vegetables in a way that Shadow of the Colossus never did.

I played it and played it again on hard mode and then played half of the time trials.

It’s still awesome.

I wonder how much of this is headache from the temporal filter the game is played through; controls that take ages to respond and camera only half-interested in player suggestions. I enjoy it well enough while I’m playing but it always feels exhausting to get back into it.

I do know that I’m not a fan of the Another World-descended cinematic platformers that runs through Limbo and is really the design template for Ico and Last Guardian; I just need more agency, even if it’s running around an empty (gloriously empty) world.

Just realized I thought everyone was talking about that Shadow of the Colossus remaster.

el oh elllll

I liked Last Guardian and finished it but I haven’t replayed it. Maybe because it has no hard mode or time trials.

My biggest regret with Last Guardian was missing that trophy you get for catching Trico in the act of taking a dump. Will probably replay it at some point just for that.
