The Icoverse and Its Legacy (formerly The Real Last Guardian Topic)

i bought this when it was on sale for cheap, but i haven’t felt like touching it. and hearing that it’s apparently a long game (seriously? a long Ueda game??) isn’t helping that.

There is some rumbling of a new Team Ico/Ueda project. This post in the news thread kicked off some renewed Icoverse discussion. Let’s continue it here!

I like that character. Specifically that red poncho. I’m looking forward to that being a splotch of bright color amidst the desolate Icoverse landscape we’ll presumably be exploring.

So these games are still relevant and everyone still has lots of opinions about them and their legacy. I’m redownloading The Last Guardian now for a second play through after not having touched it since, well, since this topic was last current. Fun times!

Going to be really disappointed if the new 2021 project turns out to be a Bluepoint remake of Ico and not a new game. Well, maybe not really disappointed but you get the idea.

it won’t be, they’ve repeatedly stated that they’re working on a completely new title. the kowloon nights-funded prototype was completed around september of 2019 and in march 2020 epic announced that they would publishing the final game. i also highly doubt that it will come out this year given that timeline, though it’s possible that it will be formally announced. notably ueda mentioned that development will not be hampered by console transitions as with previous titles.

I wonder how much of a team they still have. Team Ico was notable for being a) tiny and b) pushing experimental and world-class art & tech, the kind of engineers who read a whitepaper on inverse kinematic animation and implement it before anyone else and artists who legitimately pushed them to fuse traditional animation principles with reactive, physically modeled characters. And brand-new post-processing techniques, and, and, and,

You still see this stuff but it’s rare and usually among fresh young people who don’t know it’s not possible to do what they’re doing. All of the original team members are now of the age where they’d naturally have been pushed out of working by touching and into working by talking.

going to ask the question that we all want, but dare not to:

Will…. Atlas shrug?

Have we ever heard anything further about the red-cloak person game? Is that now this? Always been this? Gone forever?

…I guess it’s just always been this and not something separate.

Do you mean the image that’s in the “1” in this 2021 teaser?

I guess that’s what gen atlas looked like at the time.
