The Habit, or, There and Back(log) Again

My place of part-time-employment is basically the kind of place where I can just take days off and it’s not questioned, I just don’t get paid. So like, I can probably take a week or two off unpaid and not sweat it, but after that I should probably get back to it to avoid leaving too much money on the table. TBD.

I suspect shifting priorities are going to do a lot to assuage my guilt about not rounding out my gaming tastes with obscurities and forays into genres I’m less innately interested in. I’ll probably never really figure out if I like 4X games or get into Monster Hunter now, and at this point the FOMO isn’t so strong.

Time scales start to dilate. In 5 years, 10 years, 15 years you’ll have more time again. These numbers become comprehensible.

This popped up so since I have all this typed up on backloggery I looked and I technically have 618 unbeaten games atm. 456 are PC games of which… idk 70-80% are random big bundle offerings.

I’m sure I mentioned this somewhere (perhaps in this very topic I am too lazy to check) but my goal for 2022 was to play one game from every console I’ve owned (excluding Coleco (not sure how many of those are actually beatable) and DC (mine is somewhat busted and I only have one game left to beat on it)) and with 45ish days left in the year I’m down to just the DS and PS2 remaining. I’m currently picking away at Bangai-O Spirits (see the now playing topic for how poorly it is going) which just leaves December and a PS2 game remaining assuming Elden Ring ever ends. I am 90% sure I’m gonna go with Stuntman as PCXS2 save states to bypass the hellish loads sounds nice, so I guess that means that game makes up my current backlog.

…Of course that leaves time to come up with some silly gaming goal for 2023~

You see, my company surprised me with a Thanksgiving Bonus (odd but not unappreciated) in the form of a Visa gift card and I needed to use it for something.

My next big “objective” in my backlog is to play or otherwise scratch off all the remaining games in my PS+ backlog. I’ve renewed my subscription for one more calendar year and I don’t wish to do so in 2024. There’s a handful of other PS4 games in the larger backlog but I feel like I can tackle them more at my leisure. I spent a bunch of time comparing games I have through PS+ that I’ve also acquired on Epic/Steam to preemptively kick those cans down the road.

65 games as of this writing, and I’m sure a few will get added throughout the course of the year. My PS4 is currently packed away while my house is being remodeled, and even after I move in I’ll have a newborn to take care of. This is a tall order! I’m probably going to have to be ruthless in judging things to be worthy of my time. I might scratch a few of these off the list before I even get a controller back in my hands.

Great news, after I sifted out the multiplayer-focused games, realized I’d played one or two of them already and had forgotten, and then also just found reasons to put others aside, that list is now only 47 games.

I’d recommend OlliOlli 2 as I’m a sucker for a well crafted skateboarding game, but I’d also take this chance once more to say that Furi is very swell and I dig it a bunch.

Furi is a revisit for me, I played a little of it and bounced off, years ago, but I think at the time I was very impatient with darn near everything I played.

It does have a very love it… well tolerated it or hate it slow walking between each fights bit that causes a bunch of people to go “to hell with this”. Regardless… I still like OlliOlli 2

You cannot play Soulsborne with a baby around. You can only play games you can pause and do not add to your blood pressure.

I’m a freak so gonna one sentence review all of these deleting the ones I either didn’t or wouldn’t even.

look at all these words

Beyond: Two Souls - Hilarious, must play, the development was repugnant.
Bloodborne - don’t with baby
Bulletstorm - the humor is too immature for a 12 year old, garbage
Cities: Skylines - if you like this thing sounds great for a parent
Darksiders III - yum yum ur-game slop
Detroit: Become Human - probably also funny, the wife could watch
Dirt 5 - car good
Dust: Elysian Tale - nice basic furry search action
Final Fantasy VII Remake - I love it, might be hard to with a baby
Furi - i loved it 8 years ago? Wow.
Grand Kingdom - isn’t this a Sting Strategy Game? Lol.
GreedFall - feel bad western dark souls played for like 20 minutes
Heavy Rain - Jason Jason Jason
Iconoclasts - everyone on the forum love this I do not.
Infamous First light - yum yum urgame slop
Just Cause 3 - custom soundtrack just do stuff perfect end of day with baby game
King’s Quest - dropped about 30 minutes in
Knack - lol bov-level trash
Mad Max - very pretty ur-game slop
Mafia III - serious ur-game slop
Metal Gear Solid V - my favorite ur-game slop played it for like 110 hours
Need for Speed Payback - played for two minutes and deleted
Nioh 2 - can you pause this?
OlliOlli 2 - never figured out the controls
Persona 5 Strikers - probably good Japanese game slop, but I hate P5’s cast
Psycho-Pass - writing seemed bad
Sniper Elite 4 - hitler balls elimination
Soma - upgraded with time to pretty good walking sim
Sound Shapes - whatever
Star Wars Squadrons - whee star wars
Steep “are you ready for your snowboarding adven-” deleted
The Surge - western dark souls garbage can you pause?
This War of Mine: The Little Ones - too emotionally intense unless you need another reason to cry
Transformers: Devastation - yay nice garbage
Until Dawn - if you can play this with the wife it’s a hoot and a howler, by yourself? Eh.
Vampyr - supposedly good!
Velocity 2X - you ever play someone’s multiyear project and just get filled with no remarks and sadness?

There’s a very, very good chance that nearly all of these are going to get sampled for 30 minutes to 5 hours, max.

30 games. 2.5 a month! Especially when you consider I’m not truly committed to finishing most of these. Or even playing them, considering some of these I feel like I’d get just about as much from by watching a Let’s Play, tbh.

I think Bloodborne will be my PS4’s swan song at the end of the year. Or at least I’ll try lol.

Great news(?) @Rudie Nioh 2 and The Surge can be paused for real so I might actually get to try them out.

good game imo, real hbfg. menus are godawful and it has Too Many Systems, but ignore those and there’s a lot of really neat stuff in there

You can get away with ignoring the systems in Nioh? I haven’t played Nioh 2, but in Nioh 1, it often feels like I get stalled for a while and then fuck around in the menus for 45 minutes and then suddenly my character feels a lot stronger

Well I guess I should say that you can ignore many of the systems. I basically just made sure my equipment had High Numbers on it, and stuck with 2-3 weapon types at most. There are so many other things you can do too and I don’t even remember half of them, so I must not have been paying much attention.

So yeah, I guess I basically put on horse blinders and focused only on the stuff that was immediately helpful and ignored a bunch of other really annoying stuff.

Nioh 2 thinks the main issue with Nioh 1 was there weren’t enough things to equip and learn.

The prep phase of Nioh 2 is absurd but much of it you can safely ignore unless you want to minmax to the nth degree. Demon cores for example.

I’ve never played the original Nioh am I going to regret jumping straight into the sequel

No, Nioh 2 takes place before Nioh 1 iirc. No shared characters and about 2 centuries apart. Nioh 2 has a character creator which is probably one of its best additions since it’s a pretty awesome creator.
