the game boy color sucks... or DOES IT?!

it really doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of good games on there, but is there?

metal gear ghost babel (hey those initials are gb!), elevator action ex, a bunch of taiwanese fighting games, zeldas and marios and warios, r-type, ghosts and goblins…

are there any good gbc rpgs that are playable in english? the lufia and grandia games on there are kind of terrible and ugly. that star ocean game is beautiful, but last i checked, the translation wasn’t really playable?

i dunno, is the game boy color really just the shovelware dumping ground its reputation would have us believe?

There was something to be said for the way the game boy color colorized old game boy games. I liked that occasionally some games would seem to have vaguely intentional choices in which color palettes would be applied to which areas, but the limitations of the colorization meant it was never truly clear whether it was just coincidental (and most times it was, but what if…?). Like I think Pokemon Red and Blue had some intentional GBC colorization going on, though I don’t know how that would be… data in the GBC itself?

I also loved that you could hold different button combos on bootup to change the color palette of gb games. I don’t know whether those combos were even documented! It was fun to change it up as you played through a game, and eventually settle on one that felt right. I like when newer games like Downwell and Slime San give you unlockable palettes; it satisfies in the same way.

Revelations: The Demon Slayer is pretty dope, but it looks better on the GameGear. There’s also Azure Dreams (I guess that’s more of a roguelike, though).

When I pulled out my GBA a couple days back it had the GBC DDR cart in it

I really do associate the GBC with Japanese licensed, mascot, or otherwise cool character games that appeal to non-gamers/cool people (whether or not anybody actually bought them, or if they are any good, is another story). Like games that just have a ton of full screen animated graphics and very little gameplay and nice box art. I don’t really have a ton examples to back up what I’m saying. The thing I’m talking about definitely continued onto the GBA though. Oh what about that Yoiko (chief arino’s comedy duo) game:

this thread feels like an elaborate way to avoid talking about pokemon, but I’ve never played pokemon and don’t care to start, so I’ll roll with it.

I know people like survival kids. it seems pretty good.

Gold and silver are better in their remaster

dragon quest monsters 1 and 2 and the best versions of dragon quest 1, 2 and 3! also azure dreams gbc, and survival kids if that counts. the gbc is Good Actually

It’s such a fun, dinky thing! C’mon, you know it’s good. Pokemon clones are really funny to me and easy to enjoy. Like, I would just devour the Beyblade game if I could. It has Hamtaro for God’s sake!

I can think of tons of games that I want to play. Qix Adventure, Robopon, Survival Kids, and Dragon Warrior Monsters, Arle no Bouken, Game Boy Wars 3, Chase HQ, Columns with Tezuka characters. Those Goemon games look good. Even that Resident Evil game looks fun. There’s a Blade beat em up that some Kunio Kun people worked on.

(Oh my god there is a Popeye Beach Volleyball game for the Game Gear. The GBC sucks.)

Yes also saying Survival Kids.

Yeah, it’s such a weird game. Definitely worth checking out

Panel de Pon is an excellent puzzle game so by extension I imagine Pokemon Puzzle Challenge is worth checking out. It’s Panepon with a Pokemon skin.

I remember liking Power Quest, a fighting game.

I’ve only spent a couple minutes with it but the Scooby Doo GBC game is a LucasFilms-style adventure game

I liked the clear, slimmer case–and the screen was a bit sharper I think? And you could add color to the GB games you had. So it was mostly better for playing the games on. ^ _^

The Grinch for GBC basically entered my yearly xmas games rotation

Camelot’s “Mario Tennis” is the closest we’ll get to a game adaptation of Infinite Jest

Also heard a lot of people say the GBC versions of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 are the versions to play. I gotta agree.
