Game idea: A [something] game that has an inconsistent framerate and/or timestep to mimic the aesthetic of handcranked cameras and film projectors.
I suppose I prefer to smooth things out and build consensus, instead of shaming, which makes me uncomfortable
In what way? I mean I kind of love it too as like a sin.
jfc this threadâs speed
Yeah itâs the sacrilege
An earlier post made it sound like you were lumping Digital Foundry in with the dead guy and that really bothered me, because they are one of the most clinical technical analysis channels on YouTube and about the harshest thing theyâll say about the game is that its performance is âdisappointingâ or âunderwhelmingâ, which to me seems like the appropriate level of response.
If you are sensitive to frame rate, having the information to make an informed purchase (especially around game launches which is when they make most videos) is valuable, and Digital Foundry is one of the very few places doing it in a civilized and at almost âConsumer Reports levels of boringâ.
There is a difference between being motivated by consumer entitlement and motivated by the pursuit of technological improvement. Digital Foundry is the latter.
What frame rate is it?
I prefer the Forza Horizon games locked at 30fps. Thatâs probably because Iâm so used to them on the regular Xbone.
Thereâs a lot of gamer rage over Split/Second being locked at 30fps, but if you look at what that game is about, it seems like the engine and effects and everything are probably very specifically tied to the framerate. Also, itâs gorgeous just how it is!
Edit: I do feel like Daytona USA belongs at 60fps though
If a 30 fps rate is the dealer breaker for someone enjoying a game, theyâre a total wiener.
folks i am sorry i donât like being pedantic about this stuff. i like 4K and HDR and i love my TV and i like how games look at a steady 60FPS but also i am not really bothered by stuff that doesnât meet that. like, itâs a nice treat, but doesnât make or break a game for me.
i think steady framerates matter in racing and fighting games and are immoral in bullet hell shooters.
The consistency problem is largely because of ancient CRT-based refresh standards. CRTs had to refresh at a fixed rate so that rendering at 59fps makes one frame a second twice as long as all the others, which is noticeable. With recent LCDs with game-defined refresh intervals with standards like GSync/Freesync, 59FPS is almost as good as 60fps, just like how it should have been from the day LCDs were introduced.
Cool, thanks for sharing your opinion.
I didnât see this earlier, but thatâs more or less where I fall. I suspect itâs because I spent five years or so only playing beatmania IIDX for 1-2 hours a night and it consistently ran at 60fps and had highly responsive input due to its tight timing windows, and because of that Iâm more sensitive to frame drops and unresponsive inputs than people who played whatever was coming out on PS3 at the time.
Thatâs a fact, jack.
i want them to use state of the art frame interpolation to remaster metal slug
Yeah, Nintendo had a hard target of 60fps for Mario 3D World and Splatoon that the games virtually never drop below. They didnât do that because said FPS hounds are carefully monitoring Mario framerate, presumably itâs because slightly sluggish controls in a precision platformer would make for a substantially less fun game even if most players only felt it subconsciously.
BotW of course is 30fps â because Nintendo also knows it would be absurd to sacrifice draw distance or lighting effects for framerate in a game all about beautiful expansive landscapes.
everyone should have to run their desktops at 30hz for a week
A Link Between Worlds is 60fps and it is so, so much better for it. Itâs actually fun to stab shit in that game, which is something I wouldnât say about the other top-down Zeldas.
how long before VR horror devs start including intentional display lag and stuttering to induce nausea?
i mean i guess as soon as they want to stop making money but still
thread cursed the gdq dark souls 2 run currently needing restarts every so often because the framerate keeps shitting itself
