Switch! (Part 1)

i think arcade collection was the darius one to get. there’s definitely some recent posts in the shooters thread telling me which one to buy.

scarlett grace is ugly but really rad (from someone who dropped it after ~5hrs).

oh cheers!

Yeah, get the arcade Darius one, the home ports on the console collection just aren’t as good and most importantly looks like it’s missing Gaiden. It does have the SNES only Darius Twin/Super Nova, which I haven’t given a fair chance, but Gaiden is too good not to have on there.

I think Gaiden and Burst will be in their own collection later this year. Maybe? It’s confusing.

Yeah it wasn’t clear to me what would be on there besides G-Darius and some version of Burst that I’m not sure is the same as Chronicle Saviours, or just the arcade version that’s already in DBCS.

I do this thing all the time.

if you’re into the Shikigami games, Alfa put out Sisters Royale, which is just Shikigami mechanics but now it’s a bunch of girls shooting each other

I knew it didn’t have the best reputation but there is a deep dislike for Sunshine these days if the reviews of this collection are anything to go by:

I think it’s the normal reviewer bias towards smooth, consistent progression without difficulty spikes (because I have to hit my deadline!) magnified because this is a 3-game port and they’ve already got less attention on it. Hit the tiniest bump, or the game asks just a little bit too much (but seriously, how is the now-standard ‘player has full camera control’ scheme of Mario Sunshine a problem in 2020?) and they’re ready to put it down.

And it doesn’t help the Nintendo more than any other developer commits to smoothing out those spiky bits, even though it resulted in their deepest fallow period.

the kotaku review puts the port of mario sunshine down because there’s no analog control of fludd blastin which, during those shadow mario chase scene, i remember being very important, so that’s an interesting take.

i have tried to play super mario sunshine like 20 times since it came out and yeah no it is kind of bad. it is an aggressively obnoxious game to progress in. most everything feels tedious and protracted. there is little flow. everything is jankier than normal, things feel “off” or “empty”, the yoshi drums are mixed poorly, every track riffs on the same musical motif but in a kind of condescending, trite way…

it’s interesting but i’ve never thought it was “good”

i have no love for galaxy, though, so i am not sure my concerns are the same as these reviewers

like most first-party nintendo games, there is some great craftspersonship, some great music, some great level design, but in this case it’s so surrounded by particularly egregious missteps such that it hardly works for me at all

some other things that suck about sunshine:
swimming sections are categorically worse than in 64
yoshi controls terribly and makes the music sound bad
running out of water feels really bad and happens constantly

the pachinko minigame is a nadir for 3d mario

sunshine is interesting, especially for such a big nintendo game, but it’s also fucking miserable to actually play through.

I think this is pretty much the only thing reviewers care about at all. smoothness in general. add in some cinematic fidelity if the game calls for it. nothing else matters.

Also being able to get from pressing start to seeing the credits roll within five to seven days.

I mean yeah that’s great, games are often needlessly long
