I like monkeys a lot but would not ever really want to encounter most species in person. Jeff Corwin (you know, the other Animal Guy that wasn’t Steve Irwin) was actually way more nervous around them than almost everything else because they’re so nasty/unpredictable
You’re one of those self-hatin’ apes.
I love it when Japan News Cycle gets obsessed for a week because one monkey was found in an urban area and this is national news as they track down this monkey.
I bet the Monkey Onsen would have been fun 10 years ago.
The more I think about it: gorillas and such are actually the perfect video game avatars because they are furry animals, which people like, but there’s no need to physically anthropomorphize the natural charm out of them to get them to do human-like things (e.g. getting a hedgehog to run upright on sneakers).
I don’t think I feel as strongly about this as you do but I definitely get it. You’re not alone. Big Ape has been working overtime to give these guys a totally unearned reputation makeover
Yeah, I feel like this goes for most wild animals. I don’t necessarily see monkeys as particularly cruel when compared to other animals though… Every instance I’ve heard where someone has gotten their face torn off or been seriously maimed by one, usually the victim was keeping one as a pet or wandered into their enclosure at a zoo or something… which like… maybe don’t do that! Keeping them as pets or putting them in a zoo seems just as cruel to me in some ways… Monkeys gonna do what monkeys gonna do… ![]()
I’m gonna watch Lancelot Link I bet as an adult I’d get all the jokes and they’re probably so smart and funny that I’d be able to overlook the animal abuse.
Suddenly remembering how whenever he put my sister and I down for the night, my dad would say “Bedtime for the Bonzos!”
I knew it was a movie, had no idea Reagan was in it
Big Monke…Monkshe & Monkhe…wow, what a thread…
i see a grotesque primate, mocking the human form with its deceitful, smiling visage
cute monkey tho
bedtime for bonzo is like the only Reagan movie i know about because it was used constantly to make fun of him in my community of Reagan-hating Californians
i don’t think chimps or monkeys are cute (except for like 3) and also find them similarly menacing, but i would definitely be friends with a gorilla, if i could be
OK I know I’m playing both sides here, but I’m pretty sure there are apes that kill and eat monkeys and the sight of it made David Attenborough cry once.
Although I guess that’s not unusually cruel (birds eat birds), but it’s probably extra haunting with primates.
I hope the developers of Donkey Kong Bananza have given this a lot of thought.
I remember hearing some primatologist on some podcast or other talk about how in the wild all the great apes have a lot of free time, because they are not actually threatened much by predators and can forage all they need to eat in like half or less of the daylight hours; and the chimps use this free time to make elaborate social structures of backbiting and dominance and betrayal, while bonobos use it to come up with new ways to fuck. So really they’re just like us
right, like i don’t really need to be around a 90% id human being
We’re already surrounded by them!!
i’m already wearing my “You Fucking People Make Me Sick” Swans t-shirt today
Movies I learned about because of the Ramones.
I had a similar distaste of monkeys before, they’re too close to humans for comfort
But when Musk tortured some en masse for his dumbass Neuralink experiments I began to see them in a new light and developed a sense of kinship for them. They’re essentially slightly less intelligent humans and this loser was doing extreme brain tempering torture experiments on them. I liked monkeys to hate Musk more
